Lorenz was born on a farm in Schleswig. He was baptized in Christ on January 12, 1930, and confirmed on April 2, 1944, both at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak, Iowa. He received his education in rural school and graduated from Schleswig High School in 1948. He enlisted in the United States Navy on December 10, 1951, and served on the U.S.S. Orleck in the Pacific Theater from 1951-1953. On January 4, 1953, Lorenz was united in marriage to Joydine Baeth at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. The couple made their home in San Diego, California, for a short time until his Honorable Discharge on October 8, 1953, when Lorenz was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Korea Service Ribbon (One Star), United Nations Service Medal, and Purple Heart. They moved to a farm near Schleswig and were blessed with the birth of four children. After farming for a number of years, they retired and moved to Schleswig in 1987, where he mowed lawns for friends and devoted his time to working at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. After Joydine passed away, Lorenz continued to live in Schleswig and was cared for in his home by Jerrie Wigg, Joni Bral, Judy Jensen and Julie Clouse.
He was a very loving husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family, especially attending the grandchildren's sporting events. Playing euchre and gin with family and friends were favorite pastimes. He enjoyed having coffee with friends at the Feed Store and at Cheeta's, and loved to eat out. He and Joydine enjoyed going on scenic bus trips together. His faith in the Lord was evident as he was very active at Immanuel where he was a voting member, served as an elder, served on the Mission Board, and belonged to the Couples Club. When anyone new came to town, he was always there to meet them and invite them to church. He also was active in the VFW and the Schleswig Community Club.
Lorenz was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Joydine; and one brother Milford. Survivors include two daughters: Rhonda and her husband Walter; and Rebecca and her husband Travis; two sons: Randall; and Royce and his wife Jean; seven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Jolene and her husband Harlow; one brother, Roger and his wife Maria; and one sister-in-law Delores; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, January 8, 2009, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and graveside rites held at Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Organist Marlene Hight provided accompaniment for congregational hymns, "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God," "My Hope Is Built On Nothing Less" and "Onward, Christian Soldiers." Serving as honorary pallbearers were Walter R. Huebner, Aaron Huebner, Milfred Nemitz, Lorna Johnson, Keith Duncan, Dennis L. Huebner, Andrea Boyer, Doc Dreibelbis, Jerrie Wigg, Bob Janett and Allisa Tiefenthaler. Military honors and pallbearers were the VFW Post 3930 and American Legion Post 645 of Schleswig. The family invited everyone to return to the church and join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home of Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all the family. Lorenz was so special in helping us through my Dad, Emil Petersen, and my sister, Joyce Petersen's death. Your Mother Joydine was also a wonderful lady, she also held my hand at my sister's wake. They will be truly missed.

I'm sorry for your loss. May you experience the Lord's presence as you grieve the loss of Lorenz. I remember how happy my father was whenever Lorenz visited him on Sunday mornings after worship at Eventide.
