Loretta Swit Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 30 to May 31, 2025.

Loretta Swit, the actress who won hearts – and two Emmy Awards – for her portrayal of Major Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan on the TV classic "M*A*S*H," died May 30, 2025, at her home in New York City at the age of 87.

When she was cast in "M*A*S*H" in 1972, it was more than Swit's big break; the role made her a household name and defined her career. Playing Major Margaret Houlihan, the head nurse of a surgical unit in the Korean War, she offered an early example of a strong and highly capable female character on TV. Initially strait-laced, her character softened over the seasons, fitting in better with the jokesters of the 4077. Swit was one of only four lead actors to remain with "M*A*S*H" for all 11 of its seasons, and only she and Alan Alda appeared in both the pilot and the record-setting series finale.

In a post on the social media platform X, Alda spoke of his admiration for his former co-star: "Loretta was a supremely talented actor. She deserved all her 10 EMMY nominations and her 2 wins. But more than acting her part, she created it. She worked hard In showing the writing staff how they could turn the character from a one joke sexist stereotype into a real person -- with real feelings and ambitions. We celebrated the day the script came out listing her character not as Hot Lips, but as Margaret. Loretta made the most of her time here."

Swit always knew she wanted to act, having been raised with a deep love for movies. She acted in high school productions while growing up in Passaic, New Jersey, then studied acting while working in clerical jobs, including as secretary to the gossip columnist Elsa Maxwell. She began finding stage roles, with an early Off-Broadway role in a 1961 production of "An Enemy of the People." Her TV debut came with a 1969 guest role on Hawaii Five-O;" she also made early appearances on such shows as "Mission: Impossible," "Gunsmoke," and "Young Doctor Kildare."

While she was still working on "M*A*S*H," Swit also starred in the 1981 pilot of "Cagney & Lacey," playing Detective Christine Cagney, but her contractual obligations to "M*A*S*H" prevented her from continuing with the series. She never took another starring TV role, but she made many guest appearances, including on "The Love Boat," "The Muppet Show," "Murder, She Wrote," and "Diagnosis: Murder." She also appeared in such movies as "Freebie and the Bean" and "S.O.B.," and she continued acting on stage.

Swit was a noted advocate for animal welfare. A longtime vegetarian, she became vegan while she starred on "M*A*S*H." She founded the non-profit SwitHeart Animal Alliance, where she fundraised on behalf of animals.

Though her career had many facets, Swit was well aware of the impact of her most famous role. "I still get letters from women all over the world who became nurses because of Margaret Houlihan," she told Ethan Alter in a 2023 interview for Yahoo! Entertainment. "To have contributed to someone's life like that is remarkable."

In addition to her two Emmy Award wins, Swit also received eight nominations – only in her first season on "M*A*S*H" did she miss receiving a nomination. In 1989, she was honored with a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame.

Swit's co-star and longtime friend, Jamie Farr, also paid tribute to her in a statement to USA Today: " I dearly loved Loretta! As close as family can get. From the first time I met her, on what was supposed to be a one-day appearance on "M*A*S*H," we embraced each other. That became a lifetime friendship. I can't begin to express how much she will be missed."

I miss you Loretta!
I first "met" you during all those wonderfully funny, heartfelt and sobering M*A*S*H episodes many years ago. You showed all of us what a strong, smart, articulate, yet feminine member of the Armed Forces could be.

Then I really MET you last year when you agreed to join us in Newport, Oregon to honor our dear friend David Odgen Stiers on the dedication of his Studio Theater. You were the very definition of grace! Whether speaking lovingly about David, answering the audience's questions, posing for a fan's photo, and being the last one to leave the building.

Everywhere you went in our little town, you brought smiles and laughter. Thank you Loretta for your true gift - your presence in our lives! We miss you and will treasure the memories of our time together.

A smart, sassy, wonderful and caring lady has left our stage. As Margaret Houlihan you made us laugh and cry and fall in love with you over and over. A great life lived large. We shall see you among the stars above lighting the night sky forever more. Loretta, the beautiful.

I've left a message before on this page, but after having watched a number of episodes of MASH in which she is featured, I have to add how completely adorable she was in that series. We really fell in love with that girl. I cannot think of any way in which her performance could have been improved, it was a perfect reflection of her character. and somehow you felt of her as well. Actors often struggle, in her case for many years, before they find success, and you feel even more sympathetic to their plight, especially since her upbringing was so challenging as well. If not for her determination, she might have been simply another of those who are lost in the crowd. I would love to have had her for a friend, that girl who just lit up the room with her smile. The scene in which she becomes frantic not having heard from her fiance, and pulls Radar out of bed to put through an emergency call is spot on perfect, every pause and inflection right on the mark, every crashing into the furniture and tossing things around perfect. No one could have done it better. She was just so good at her craft. I am truly sad to lose her, but I know that the affection of her many fans was warmly received, and I hope made up for all her struggles. And I hate that we all have that final appointment. It just seems unfair somehow.

Miss Swit played the part of Major Margaret Houlahan so perfectly. She helped create the character to the fullest extent. She will forever be remembered for this portrayal as it was one of the best ever seen on tv....the Major will live forever!

I watch Mash all the time on Me Tv and Loretta´s MAJ Margaret Houlihan character is admirable. As I would be watching it (even up until last week) I knew she was still probably watching as well. We were fortunate to know her from her great acting and the wonderful things she did in her post MASH life. GOD BLESS LORETTA SWIT- Henry Girolamo

Posted this on Facebook when I heard of her passing.

So the news of Loretta Swit´s passing hit me hard. I was a huge mash fan growing up (and still am) a few years ago I got a random follower on twitter that was obviously a fake account for her. So I decided to email her on Facebook about it and adding how im a huge fan etc and was shocked to get a reply.

"Yes Seth, I do read and each and every message - thank you so much for this warm and wonderful one! And lovely photo! (I had told her i had recently met alan alda and incl the pic) I did see on Twitter you´d commented that Alan should interview me. Stay tuned. There´s a lot going on, that´s all I can say! Thank you as well for reporting the fake account to Twitter. It´s sad, and dangerous, that that´s what people resort to. My team is working on it as well but it´s great to have additional "eyes" and "ears" out there looking out for me! Wow 3 generations of MASH fans! Having your kids watch it with you - wow that just makes my day! Seth, thank you again and I do hope to meet you as well some day. Thank you again."

That led to many back and forth emails over the years as well as meeting her twice with Alex. On Sunday I did a couple of insta stories from Ocean Beach´s Memorial Day event and her liking them made my day.

Goodbye, Farewell and Amen. RIP

Bill Jordan

June 6, 2025

She was beautiful and talented, and I loved the character she created on MASH, in so many memorable moments where her ability at having turned a two dimensional character into a fully realized person was so brilliantly on display. In her softer moments, her true nature and her vulnerabilities were there to see, behind the stern mask that she wore. The little dog that she fed, when it was hit and killed by a truck. The tearful confession to her nurses that she felt excluded. And those times when her affection for Hawkeye couldn't be concealed. Her beaming response when her father finally told her he was proud of her. She was so very right in that role, and created a character we'll never forget. I was so sorry to learn of her disappointment in marriage, and having spent those final years alone. We really loved that girl, and we'll miss her. I hope the affection of her many friends, and from her fans, helped somehow to fill those empty spaces in her life.

Loretta, was funny and down to earth I met her at Motor City Comic Con, before her 85th birthday. Her assistant got my autograph photo of me and Loretta said "Hey where´s my Autograph?"and I brought my photos to her she picked one said like one photo and then gave me one in return picture of herself in a cast she said "It suck´s to get old", she explained that her photo was a foot in her cast in the photo and autograph she gave me. Then she said "Misty, come over the other side my dear friend let´s do pinup pose together". So here us posing together. I will charsh that memorie forever.

Rest in peace and hopefully her family will always keep in touch. Much love and light.
