Lorna Reed Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 11, 2022.
Lorna Doone Reed, widow of John Charter Reed (former Florida Assistant State Attorney General, deceased), passed away on January 28, 2022. Born in Springfield, Illinois, on April 6, 1931, Lorna lived a vibrant, exciting, and full life.

Anyone who knew her was the recipient of her infectious laugh and her zest for life. Lorna always said to grab life while you can and squeeze it to pieces. That she did, from catching bill fish in Bimini and 100-pound tarpons in the Florida Keys, panning for gold in the Alaskan wilderness, to defending herself from surly kitchen staff with her trusty revolver. She was always there for her son, even when he was lost at sea, coping with his aggressive "pet" alligator, or losing a contest to an equally aggressive lawn mower. She was (still is), the best mom any son could hope to have.

She was known for many things, perhaps most prominent was that she always dressed in orange because it made her happy (except for the two weeks near Christmas when red was required). She was also an amazing cook, Sicilian spaghetti beyond compare and endless banana breads upon request. Two of her favorite stories were when Nat King Cole was on one of her flights and gave her a table next to the stage for one of his performances and serenaded her (Tony Bennett sang on another flight), and when she won a bet on a gray horse (at 100 to 1 odds) in a race and bought a new Cadillac (with an orange license plate!) in cash that day with the winnings.

Lorna had a remarkable resume, including graduating from Brown's Business College, winning the Miss Springfield pageant, and such diverse jobs as secretary for the State of Illinois, Eastern Airlines stewardess, real estate agent, owner/ manager of Papa Joe's Bar and Restaurant and of Lorna's Orange Hutch gift shop in Islamorada, FL, manager of the major appliance department for a retail store, and, her last job before retiring at 87, part-time receptionist (and full-time social director) at Del Mar Realty. She relocated to Montana three years ago to be near her son.

Her family was her number one priority: her beloved son Clay, daughter-in-law Anna, niece Vickie, nephew Larry, great-nephew Damien, his wife Megan, and great-great nephews John and Billy, and many, many friends which had become part of the family. She was the best mom and the most fun aunt.

Besides her family, her greatest passion was serving as president of the San Diego Chapter of the Eastern Silverliners, an association of retired Eastern Airlines flight attendants. Lorna was instrumental in arranging a yearly Christmas party, the Flight to the North Pole, for seriously ill children in the San Diego area (through Rady's Children's Hospital). The party was originally hosted by Continental Airlines at Lindbergh Field, but when that venue became unavailable, Lorna lobbied the U.S. Coast Guard station on Harbor Drive. Eventually the Coast Guard agreed and that began a two-decade tradition. Over time, the party became bigger and more spectacular, with Santa arriving by helicopter, a live orchestra, magicians, and appearances from Shamu and friends.

To help defray the costs of the party, Lorna spearheaded an annual "Day at the Races" fundraiser at the Del Mar Racetrack. This yearly August fest became a memorable event in its own right, with dozens of friends and family making it a highlight of the summer social season.

In her spare time, Lorna loved to dance, especially line dancing at the Encinitas Senior Center, which she continued to do well into her 80s. She was an accomplished golfer, avid bowler, and amazing swing dancer. She also loved to volunteer at her church, Calvary Lutheran in Solana Beach, as well as with the Del Mar Chamber of Commerce and Cardiff Library.

A funeral service was held at the Missoula Manor in April 2022 and a video is available at: tinyurl.com/yc2p2h5m A copy of the program is available at: tinyurl.com/4u2bxv5b In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lorna's memory to the Hole in Wall Gang Camp (555 Long Wharf Dr. New Haven, CT 06511) for seriously ill children. Founded by Paul Newman, the Camp is one of the organizations supported by the International Silverliners.

To my Doone Bug, my Bug-A-Boo, Dooners, Doonie, Bug, Lorna Doone, and a long line of other names I call you -- I miss you my friend.

While much time has gone by from your passing to now, I was never ready to share here. I guess I wanted to keep my memories of you for me.

I was privileged to have worked with Lorna for many, many years at Del Mar Realty. She was my sidekick and always made the days go by fast when we worked together. We may have laughed more that worked. She would joke and say she was going to end up in jail for doing something, and I'd tell her not to worry...that I'd visit her and smuggle her in cigarettes to trade for things on the inside; or that I'd be sitting in jail with her. She always laughed at that.

Lorna would make veggie bologna (which I never knew existed prior) sandwiches, cut in quarters, and she knew that at about 10:30, I was ready for a snack, and like magic, a sandwich square would appear on my desk.

Lorna would make deviled eggs, and the hotter the better. I now make deviled eggs using her recipe (jalapeƱos and hot sauce). Everything was the hotter the better. Hot sauce on everything!

Lorna was so much more than a coworker. She truly turned into my family and I always thought she really needed to meet my grandpa. They were both life of the party type of people.

Lorna was one of the most beautiful people (inside & out) that I know. Her selflessness, positivity, and eagerness to help, are traits I try to remember myself to carry out.

Without knowing it, she taught me life skills, such as:
bet on the grey horse,
everything needs more orange,
again, more hot sauce.

To Clay and family, please know I, too, share in your grief. She sure did love you all and was so proud of you.

Clay, she loved visiting you and Anna in Montana; although, she did say you made her work out and eat too much broccoli. I never made it to visit her in Montana and that is a regret I carry.

Well, Bug, I can only imagine what kind of trouble you're getting yourself into up there, but having a blast doing it.

Till I see you again,
Jen

It has taken me a long time to write a tribute to Lorna simply because she was so full of enthusiasm and joie de vivre that I can hardly believe she is no longer with us. So on almost the anniversary of your passing, I salute you, dear friend!

I will never forget the day Lorna walked into the Greater Del Mar Chamber of Commerce office to volunteer, dressed, of course, in orange. A ray of sunshine crossed my path, and it has continued to light my way, even through the darkest corridors.

As long as I knew Lorna, I felt as if some remarkable force was urging me to smile and enjoy life and, yes, to get up and dance! What fun we had winding through the sirtaki at the Greek Festivals and bobbing along in a conga line at Chamber banquets! Not to mention doing a few steps in place when favorite grey horses won at those lovely Silverliners Days at the Races!

While Lorna always made sure that everyone was having fun - yes, even sampling her fire-hot chili, she was an outstanding community resource as well as a wonderful and extremely loyal friend. Always impeccably turned out, she loyally supported local businesses and dispensed invaluable information to visitors to The Greater Del Mar Chamber of Commerce. She was also a dedicated and highly successful fundraiser, not only for the Chamber and the Silverliners but also for her Hole in the Wall Flight to the North Pole events. How lovely it was to experience the look of wonderment on the faces of seriously ill children as Santa arrived by plane at the Coast Guard Station in San Diego with his bag of goodies!

I would also like to pay tribute to Lorna's skills as an office manager during her years at Coldwell Banker and at Del Mar Realty. She somehow always managed to get along with everyone and had a distinct talent for keeping even the most demanding situations on an even keel. I don't honestly think there was a person who knew Lorna who did not love and respect her. She was a truly great lady!

Over the years, I had the pleasure of knowing Lorna's wonderful family, of whom she was so proud. I cannot begin to imagine the huge sense of loss they must be feeling. However, I am confident that Lorna's inimitable spirit continues to illuminate their paths and bring them a delicious sense of happiness bathed in a distinctly orange glow.

I knew Lorna for untold number of years and time spent with her was always enjoyable. She was a great volunteer in our Cardiff-by-the-Sea community and always available when help was needed. I loved her, called her my orange Friend and she brought something special to my life.
Rest in peace dear friend, you remain in my heart.

What an incredible lady. I do enjoyed the short time I knew Lorna. What a class act. She was fearchly independent. Never asking for help while doing things herself.

Rest in peace beautiful lady.

AH, the memories. Thank you, Clay and Anna, for sharing your beautifully written obituary which so wonderfully captures the essence of Lorna!

Her years with us at Del Mar Realty Associates (until her move to your part of the country) were memorable. Her zest for life and family and dancing and ORANGE are legendary. Lorna loved my 2018 orange Honda Fit, which I still drive and may keep forever.

Lorna is loved and she is sorely missed.

Lorna was in my line dance classes from the start. We became good friends and I always picked her up to go wherever I was going. We went to the Elks, we had parties at my house, we went line dancing every where we could. She stayed at my house with me when my husband died. We were best friends for many many years, I worried when I could no longer reach her. I hope she is with family that departed before her.
