Lorne McLachlan Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Apr. 26 to Apr. 27, 2008.

Lorne Thomas McLachlan November 13, 1946 ~ April 20, 2008 Lorne passed away peacefully with family at his side after a hard fought battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Ini McLachlan. His children, Scott and wife Jenny, Colin and wife Tanya, Lisa and husband Craig and Jay. His grandchildren, Sidney, Ben, Emily and Sophia. Brother Morris and wife Jan and nieces, Sherry and Wendy and their families. Lorne had many interests in his full life with his family coming first. His passion for fishing and lifelong love of running were more than just hobbies. They were as much a part of him as the moustache he always sported. The world of fishing is a gift he passed on to his grandchildren. To them, fishing and "Papa" are synonymous and will always be remembered as such. His personal and professional experiences took Ini and himself on many adventures. The opportunities to work abroad gave them so many wonderful experiences and led to many great friendships. "What is the use of living, if it be not to strive for noble causes and to make this muddled world a better place for those who will live in it after we are gone?" WC Lorne's 100% commitment to everything he was a part of was contagious and for everyone who knew him and all the causes he fought for, our lives are better for having had him in it. He touched so many people in so many ways and his contributions to all of our lives are immeasurable. He will be forever in our hearts. Tight Lines Forever Buddy! We are having a Celebration of Life on Friday, May 2nd at 1:00 pm, Vancouver Rowing Club. Casual dress please. The family would like to thank everyone for their love and support during this difficult time. Special thanks to: John Sandbach and Rob Fuller of Austin, TX for the best care and support that went above and beyond. Rob Cohan of Austin, TX for getting us home. David Brown for unbelievable support and friendship. Judy and Bob for being the crazy glue in our life. Ian Mellor for past and present support in all matters, professional and personal. Palliative Care at Burnaby General for their amazing compassion and care. If so desired, donations to www.castingforrecovery.com would be appreciated in lieu of flowers. Lorne believed very strongly in this program and volunteered many hours helping enrich the lives of many cancer survivors.

Rick Townsend e-mailed me the news about Lorne and I passed it along to my five brothers and one sister. My name is Jo Ann, we lived down the street from Lorne for at least 15 years. Our yard was full of kids and Lorne made the journey down as a pre-schooler, followed by his faithful dog, Daisy. When I told my family members about Lorne's passing two of my brothers replied. One said that Lorne had the most impressive comic book collection he had ever seen and my older brother, Trevor, now 65, said that he remembers the beautiful hand-crafted wooden toys in Lorne's back yard that Mr. McLachlan had made. Trevor said that the McLachlan's back yard was where he took our younger brother and sister to play when he had to look after them. He remembers Mrs. McLachlan watching out the window to make sure that we were safe. I am not sure Lorne would want me to say this but to me it reflects a warm, sensitive young man; he cried the first day of school, and the second. I sat behind him, I kept silent out of respect. Our paths crossed over the years, until grade twelve and then we never saw each other again. I am truly sorry for your loss, it is much too soon to lose your husband, your Dad and your Papa. Blessings on you all, from, Jo Ann and the Harris family.

Lorne is warmly remembered by the lunchtime running club during his time at BC Transit in Surrey. After our first encounter with the "junk yard dogs" Lorne taught us to FORM A SQUARE, proven to be great advice on many of our lunch time excursions. On behalf of all us who joined his running army, we greatly enjoyed his company.
