Lorraine Munger Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 6, 2024.
Lorraine Marie Munger (née Nicolosi), aged 68, passed away from complications related to pancreatic cancer on July 27, 2024, in New London, CT, the city where she was born on April 20, 1956. A self-taught artist known for her spirited independence and creative passions, Lorraine leaves behind a legacy of vibrant living and heartfelt human connections.

From her early days in New London to her adventures down to Texas and across Europe, Lorraine's life was marked by her bold choices and free-spirited endeavors. After a challenging start, as a single mom, she courageously pursued an education, earning her GED and later an associate degree in nursing. Lorraine dedicated over two decades to caring for severely disabled clients for the State of Connecticut, treating each individual with profound respect and compassion.

Lorraine's life was rich with interests, including classic movies, live music, creative cooking, DIY home improvement, sewing, jewelry making, painting, and gardening. Her home in Niantic was a sanctuary filled with her dogs, handmade gifts, and ongoing projects, reflecting her endless creative spirit. A songbird, she was also known for singing her favorite bluesy 70s and 80s rock 'n' roll for any crowd, at any party. She loved being by the water and lived for a good time.

She is survived by her daughter, Lee Sauerhoff, Lee's husband, Gabriel, and their three children, Quinn, Cade, and Brody. Lorraine also leaves behind her four sisters, Charlene Berg, Cynthia Scarpa, Anita Ash, and Eileen Gibson, their extended families, and her devoted best friends, Cheryl Marchant and Debbie Henson.

A small, private memorial service will be planned for a later date to celebrate Lorraine's life and legacy. Many thanks to Kim Ash and Lorraine's lovely neighbors for all the love, care, and support during the last months of her life.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in memory of Lorraine to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, Attn: Office of Development, 365 Montauk Ave., New London, Ct 06320 or www.lmhospital.org/donors.

I met Lorraine while working for The State of Connecticut and we hit it off immediately. She was so calm, caring and kind. I needed a friend like her in my life desperately at that time. Even though I only lived in CT 8 years, we spent a lot of time boating, laughing and having long conversations about our lives. Few people in this world are as giving and honest as Lorraine. Until we meet again sweetheart.

Hi Auntie La, we miss you!
I just want to say that I remember preparing food for the family that day when you passed, and the song Blue Bayou was repeating over again in my my mind. I remember singing it out loud several times thinking of you.
My most favorite memories are when we shared a roof together, when you and Lee brought so much joy to our lives when we needed family the most.
I will always look for you when I sing. I know this is something we will always share together.
Rest now, you are in good hands.

Dear Lorraine - As your son-in-law, I have the privilege of enjoying as a life partner what I believe to be your greatest creation: your daughter Lee . It was not an easy journey for you as a single mom but you managed to raise an intelligent, independent, caring and beautiful woman. This says much about you.

While Lee blazes her own path, I see you in her and vice versa. She loves the sea just as you did. She loves art and music. Just as you did. And she isn't afraid to get on stage to bust out some 70s rock hits on the karaoke stage, just like you.

Thank you for bringing Lee into our lives and for your impact on all of us. May you rest in peace knowing you've made the world a better place and feeling secure that we will do our best to carry on your legacy of living life on one's own terms.

Love, Gabe

Lorraine was a real down to earth person, who had compassion for animals and humans alike! Her and I grew up together in the 70's and I remember that she was just so damn beautiful! She had that kind of early 70's natural beauty, with the long straight hair, the jean bell bottoms and sandals! But more than that, she was beautiful on the inside too! Whenever we came in contact, whether at a family event or a wild party, we always enjoyed talking to one another! I could make her laugh most of the time, but sometimes she'd just give me that look of..."Oh Wayne!" Lorraine...I miss you already and I love you!

I only known Loraine for 4 years. I met at the Waterford HS swimming pool. She was very nice we talked about how much she love music. During the summer months we would go to all the concerts at the McCook and Waterford Beach. amazingly she knows all the songs. Her voice was like an angel. Rest In Peace
my friend you´re going to be missed.
