Louis DeMatteo Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 2, 2017.
Louis Michael DeMatteo, 97, of Auburn Hills, Michigan, passed away peacefully on January 02, 2017 at 12:17am at Crittenton Hospital, Rochester Hills, Michigan.

Private Visitation and Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 07, 2017, 3:00-4:00pm, at the Pixley Funeral Home 3530 Auburn Rd Auburn Hills, Michigan.

Louis was born on June 25, 1919 in New Haven, Connecticut to Ralph and Bella (Russo) DeMatteo. On October 19, 1941, Louis married Mary (Kaliszewski) DeMatteo in New Haven, Connecticut.

He was very proud to have been a Supervisor for the Chance Vought Corporation building the F4U Corsair Airplanes during World War II in support of the War effort. Once the war was over, he worked as a Construction Supervisor for Dwight Construction in which he walked the high rise buildings without fear. Then, he became the Owner/Operator of three Restaurants; Ralph's Pizza, Raffaele's Pizzeria, and Lou's Bakery located in New Haven and North Haven, Connecticut for 60 years.

He loved sports, especially Football, Basketball, and Baseball. He played for a Minor League Football Team in Connecticut, his nickname was "Armstrong" because he was a very fast runner and was very strong. He also loved coaching Football, Basketball, and Baseball. His favorite baseball team was the New York Yankees and also the Detroit Tigers. He enjoyed going to games with his Grandsons and Great Grandsons as well as watching them on the Television.

He loved music and played the trumpet in his own Big Band group. He also loved Ballroom dancing, especially the Waltz. He provided tips and suggestions to his Granddaughter Jennie when she was taking Ballroom dance lessons.

He was an avid fisherman; he loved fishing in the lakes and rivers of Connecticut and Michigan with his Brother, Son, Son in laws, and Grandsons. He shared his love of crabbing with his Son and Daughter in Connecticut. He also enjoyed hunting Deer, Ducks, Pheasants, and Grouse. He raised Pheasants and Grouse on his parents' farm, so he could release the birds into the nearby woods so that his family and friends could hunt them.

He is preceded in death by his Parents, Ralph and Bella; Wife, Mary and Daughter, Isabel; Brothers, Stephen, William, and Pasquale; and Sisters, Filomena (Phyllis) Whitley, Marie Carrano, Kathryn (Katie) Passirello, and Carmel Papa; and numerous Nieces and Nephews.

He is survived by his Children, Loretta (late James) Juricic, Louis DeMatteo, Joyce (Walter) Cwiertniewicz, and Annette DeMatteo; a Brother, Ralph DeMatteo and a Sister, Evelyn Smith; Grandchildren, RoseMarie (Deborah) Juricic, Jennie Juricic, Joseph (Julie) Juricic, Lon (Kattie) Juricic, Louis Juricic (Eva), Anthony DeMatteo, Louis DeMatteo Jr, Lee (Diana) DeMatteo, Michelle (TJ) Parrott, Eleanor Weight, Theresa (Shawn) Greenspun, Mary Woodward, and Charles (Brittany) Auzenne III; as well as 20 Great-Grandchildren; and one Great-Great-Grand daughter.

The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the Doctors and Nurses at the Crittenton Hospital (Rochester Hills, Michigan) and the Hospice Doctors and Nurses from Seasons (Madison Heights, Michigan).
