I was born in San Antonio, Texas and my dates might be fuzzy, but I returned to Trinity University in 1982. I met Louis in that era. He had his studio on Blanco and Fredericksberg. We would discuss art and politics. Andre Breton and revolution;Leon Trotsky and art and revolution writings and of course the relationship he had with Diego Rivera who asked President Cardenas to allow him asylum back in the late 1930's. I liked to drop by and visit and discuss everything and anything with Leroy. I remember I did some kind of work on his ceiling there, but what it was who knows. Leroy then moved to Zarzamora just South of intersection with Fredericksberg into that white stucco building looked almost like New Mexico style building. His crosses at that time were popular and now even my sister to this day has her kitchen walls full of crosses the first one I gave her was Louis piece. In 2005 I started teaching in Costa Rica and doing some solar consulting in Libya;building a solar chimney. I lost track of him and had not seen him forever. Amazing I just found out he went on to the do some canvass and crosses in another dimension;smiling that cool smile and laughing. I thought of him especially today because my cousin sent me a picture of her daughter standing in front of a wall with crosses hanging in her house(10-31-14).
Immediately I thought of him. I will try to attach her picture. She is a young woman who he is impacting to this day with his art. We never discussed whether he believed in the big bang theory or otherwise, but he was steeped in chincano culture and that was his religional denomination. En paz descansa el amigo. Hasta La Vitoria; Dr. Arturo Ramirez Adan

I am shocked and saddened to have just learned of Louis' death. I read of it in the December 07/January 08 issue of La Voz de Esperanza where editor Gloria Ramirez writes: "And, as I write, Malena Gonzales Cid calls and informs me of Louis LeRoy's passing." I met Louis while I was working in Washington, DC in the early 90s and helped him establish telecommunications techniques for The Association of American Cultures when he was shaping it out of his home here in San Antonio. I'm glad he was able to finish his life in the place where he was from--Yuma.

.
I once asked Louis this question during a party at his house about a year ago...
"Louis" I said, "If the Universe was created in one big explosion and since science tells us that material cannot be created or destroyed, where did that material come from to begin with?
He answered with a straight face:
"It was always there". And then he laughed and smiled...
That was Louis.
"Vaya con Dios, mi Amigo…"

What a great opportunity to have finally met Louis at the 2006 TAAC Conference in Pittsburg where he shed insight on the business of art and how art impacts lives. Long live the spirit of Louis Leroy Jr. Let God continue to bless us for him and all the lives he touched. Rest in Peace.

I so wanted to be in Yuma today to pay my respects to a wonderful visionary man, but, the weather won't allow it. Louis, I will miss your scheming and dreaming, your sense of humor and dedication to TAAC--I will do my best to carry on your mission for artists and cultural workers. Pilamaye.

Louis's death comes as a blow in my heart, so I can only imagine what a loss his passing must be to his family. I shall miss him, and count myself fortunate to have been his close friend. He was an artist truly of our time and place, as well as a man whose generous spirit gave other people the space and inspiration to be great in their own right.

Louis led the Arts Council of San Antonio through a difficult passage and distinguished the organization by providing direct grants to individual artists, to support specific artistic projects, for the first time in local history. His art affirmed his roots at the same time he did new, imaginative things with ancient symbols. He was a calm, mediating influence in our local cultural world, and a pioneer in the movement of artists to re-inhabit the central city and convert old commercial buildings into living and working spaces. I and many other people in San Antonio will always remember him warmly for these contributions, for his art, and for his friendship.

Luis was a gifted artist. I had him in an art class in high school and he was so far ahead of the rest of us in his work. He did
all the drawings in one of our annuals. It is one of my treasured possessions. His art and love of life, enriched us all and will keep his memory alive forever.
It was a pleasure to know you Luis.
Descansa en Paz....amigo.

I've known Louis for many years. He's always been and will continue to be a giving, generous spirit. I am blessed to have recently spent some quality time with him during the recent TAAC conference. As always, he was the most gracious host ever. Even when it got late and he was ready to hit the hay, he allowed all who came into the hospitality room to enjoy themselves and unwind from the day's work and/or continue the dialogue. I will miss his very, very much.

Louis was a colleague in the arts both here in Arizona and nationally. I counted him as a friend and respected his energy, great nature, and dedication to bringing the arts to all people. I hope he will be remembered for his generosity of spirit and hard work in bringing the voices and work of contemporary Latino artists to the forefront in Arizona.
