Louise CARIGNAN Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen from Jun. 12 to Jun. 14, 2013.
CARIGNAN, Louise M.D
With great sadness we announce that Louise Carignan M.D., C.S.P.Q., F.R.C.P.(C) departed this world surrounded by her family on June 8th, 2013. Giving comfort at the hospital 24/7 were Louise's daughter Pascale, her best pal Kristina, her partner Ron Crooks and Sam Ellens. Louise faced the daunting challenge of ovarian cancer with a huge courage that never failed her. Louise's end was very gentle as she floated on pillows. Our family is unable to adequately express our appreciation for all the kindness and support we received from the nurses and doctors at 8 West, Ottawa Hospital - General Campus. A funeral service, conducted by Rev. Ernie Cox, will be held in the Sacred Space at the Beechwood Cemetery and Funeral Services, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa at 2:00 PM on Friday, June 14th. You are invited to meet before the service from 1:00 PM to share your remembrances and reflections, during which time, at Louise's request, Rev. Cox will play the music of Ray Charles on the grand piano. A reception will follow after the internment in the Borden & Fleming suites. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Angels in Action would be appreciated http://angelsinaction.ca/.

Une femme dynamique, à l'esprit incisif et original. Elle a pu marquer l'esprit de plusieurs personnes qui ont profité de sa présence et de son enseignement.

Dear Pascale,

Our family knew yours, many years ago, in Cumberland. I would like to express my deepest sympathies to you at the passing of your mother, Louise.

She was a beautiful person – and we were fortunate to have known her. Our thoughts are with you at this time.

When I think about Louise I think about her daughter Pascale, the common thread that bound her life to mine. Louise raised a wonderful caring person who is a good listener, someone I can share my troubles with, and someone who makes me laugh.

Pascale is who she is today, and she will become whoever it is that she will become, in large part because Louise was her mother.

Louise lived her life amidst the people she loved and who loved her in return. Today she stands on another shore, recounting the of stories home.

Farewell Louise and thank you for the gift of your daughter

I have met Louise as my old friend Ron's "new" mate. Over the course of the last year Balazs and I had the opportunity to get to know Louise beyond her public face, as we conversed over Hungarian food a few times at our place. These were occasions of warmth and comradeship (in what? in life, I guess), spirited discussions and laughter, comparing notes on our widely varying upbringings. We are not easy people to befriend, but somehow we have taken Louise into our hearts and cherished these visits.
I believe that when a person allows others to participate in their process of dying, they teach us something, very generously. Louise had done that. She had embodied her very particular brand of looking death square in the face and yet continuing living to the last. That's how I saw her in these last few weeks. I know that I will remember and think about this option, this model, her example, when I contemplate my own way about death.
Thank you Louise for everything, in our brief encounter.

Louise and I go back 40 years to the exuberant days when we were students and neighbors on Bloomfield Street in Montreal. She had a keen intelligence, abundant talent, zest for life, and much strength and courage. These qualities I could hear in her wonderful characteristic laugh and see in her accomplished sensitive paintings.
I will always appreciate our shared times together, over the pleasures of conversation and fine dinners, song and through art.
My heart goes out to Ron, Pascale, Kristina and Sam in the loss of a loving partner, friend, and mother.

Love and peace to you, Louise.

I was hoping to meet Louise again this summer on a warm sunny night on her boat in front of Parliament Hill eating salmon on calm waters...Now, I can see her when I look up in the sky…she is now the one who blow the wind for us so we can all continue our sailing to our ultimate destination, where we will see her again...Just a matter of time. Meanwhile, let's continue to talk to her and tell her all the love we have for wonderful person she was and the wonderful moments we have spent with her.

That's not an easy thing to pay tribute to a very close friend. Louise was an incredibly strong, bright, loving and courageous woman. I am very grateful to have known her. I will never forget the many adventures we had sailing on Lake Ontario and the many ways she touched my life. Her spirit and friendship will never be forgotten. My thoughts are with you Ron, Pascale, Kristina and Sam.

Rest in peace my dear friend.

I will never forget her passion for sailing as she taught me to navigate Tangier in the Thousand Islands. I will also not forget almost being arrested by US Immigration off Bolt Castle when Louise gave the order to drop anchor! I post below an amazing double image photo of Louise and I on that trip!
My heart goes out to my brother and his family at this time and know that Louise would want us all to remember the good times.

She was a wonderful and caring person. Like a second mom to my daughter Kristina just as Pascale is like a third duaghter to me. All my prayers and thoughts are with you and your family.
