Louise van HAAFTEN Obituary

Published by Edmonton Journal from Feb. 7 to Feb. 8, 2013.
van HAAFTEN, Louise Marie
December 15, 1920 - February 3, 2013
On February 3, 2013 Louise passed away suddenly and peacefully at the age of 92.
Louise will be lovingly remembered by her son Gerry (Debbie); daughter-in-law Marion (Doug Abbott) of Kingston, Ont.; as well as five grandsons, Colin (Shannon) of Ottawa, Jonathan of Whistler, B.C., Tim of Toronto, Greg (Tara) and Joel of Edmonton. She is also survived by three great-grandchildren; Willem and Callum of Ottawa, and Kamryn of Kingston. Louise is also remembered by many friends all over the world.
Louise was predeceased by her husband Gerrit; son Randy; brother John; and her parents John and Marie Buchanan.
Louise was born in Lawang on the island of Java when her life of adventure began. She lived on the islands of Java and Sumatra for 35 years including four years of occupation during WWII. She married Gerrit in 1948. They moved to Holland in 1953 and then immigrated to Canada in 1954. During her lifetime she moved many times following Gerrit's career with Imperial Oil which included an overseas assignment in Australia as well as a post-retirement position in Dubai. Louise enjoyed travel for the purpose of connecting with family and friends that were always most important to her. Louise will be remembered for her generosity and kindness to everyone especially by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a woman of great faith and had been active in the United Church of Canada as well as the Order of the Eastern Star. Although her health had declined during the past several years, her mind remained sharp and she still read avidly, keeping up on current and international affairs.
The family would like to extend sincere appreciation to the staff at CapitalCare Laurier House for their excellent care and compassion during Louise's stay. Thanks and gratitude is also extended to Marlene Marvin who also provided assistance and companionship which enhanced Louise's life making it much more comfortable.
Reverend John Weinlich will officiate at a Funeral Service at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 9, 2013 at Connelly-McKinley Funeral Home, 10011 - 114 St., Edmonton.
In lieu of flowers, donations will be most appreciated to CapitalCare Laurier House Lynwood or the Salvation Army.
A private family interment will take place at a later date
