New Boston, NH - Robert J. Callahan, age 56, of New Hampshire, formerly of Quincy MA, died peacefully, Friday, February 7, 2025, of military acquired ALS, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Robert was born in Quincy (Houghs Neck) to Margaret M. (Dalrymple) and the late Edward J. Callahan, Jr. He was a graduate of Boston College High School and a 1991 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, where he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps.
Bob was proud to have served in the United States Marine Corp. Upon completion of The Basic School and The Field Artillery Officer's Basic Course, he deployed twice to the Mediterranean, first with India Company, 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt as the Officer-In-Charge of the Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force Shore Fire Control Party, and next with Fox Battery, 2nd Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment aboard the USS Tortuga as Fox Battery's Guns Platoon Commander. First Lieutenant Callahan was then assigned to Recruiting Station San Francisco where he served as the Operations' Officer. Leaving active service Captain Callahan's first assignment in the Marine Corps Reserves was as Executive Officer of Headquarters and Services Company with 1st Battalion, 25th Marines. Following a period in the Individual Ready Reserves, Major Callahan was assigned to Marine Wing Support Squadron 472, Detachment Bravo. He served in several billets while with Det B including Heavy Equipment Platoon Commander, Officer-In-Charge of Afghanistan Detachment, Communications Officer, and Officer-In-Charge of the Forward Arming and Refueling Point at Forward Operating Base Al Qa'im, Iraq. After leaving MWSS-472, Lieutenant Colonel Callahan worked for Recruiting Station Portsmouth as the Recruiting Support Officer, and most recently for Marine Forces North as an Emergency Preparedness Liaison Officer for FEMA. After 28 years he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Bob was a former Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus Milford Council 3035.
Beloved husband for thirty years to Ivana (Hrabar) Callahan. Devoted father of Molly V. Callahan, Robert J. Callahan Jr, and Laura M. Callahan.
I have always enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing, especially if I could take family along. I know that I will be remembered for my service as a Marine, but I hope to also be remembered as a good Catholic man, like my brothers in the Knights of Columbus.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 34 Amherst St, Milford N.H. on Saturday. February 15th, at 11:00a.m. followed by Military Honors at the Church. Due to current conditions, Internment will be held in the spring at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery.
