Lt. Nola Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 2, 2020.
Lt. Charles (Sonny) Nola, 91
Retired from NYFD Engine 162 and took varied leadership roles in S.I. youth sports over many years
Lieutenant Charles (Sonny) Nola, age 91, passed away peacefully at home on May 24, 2020, surrounded by his family.
Charles was the devoted son of the late Frank and Mildred Nola. He was the beloved husband of Michelina (nee Yaccarino) for 68 years. He was the loving father of Frank Nola and his wife Patty, Carol Nola and Marianne DiFiore and her husband John. He was the cherished grandpa of Frank Nola and his wife Marisa, Erica McEvaddy and her husband Kevin, Joseph DiFiore and his fiancée Victoria, Carolyn Mastrangelo and her husband Michael and Samantha Nola. He was the dear great-grandpa of nine. He was the fond brother of the late Frances Christie.
Charles worked for the NYC Fire Department for 30 years. In 1977, he was promoted to Lieutenant and later retired in 1986 from Engine 162.
Charles was very involved with sports in the Staten Island community. Specifically, he was the baseball commissioner for the Blessed Sacrament Titan League. He also coached, umpired and refereed for the Staten Island Boys Football League, Mid Island Babe Ruth Baseball League and the CYO Basketball League. One of his most proud moments had to be in 1961 when Charles coached his football team, the Staten Island Amusement Machine and took them to Montreal, Canada, to compete in the championship game. As he got older, Charles truly enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in sporting events, always supporting them and cheering them on. In his spare time, he loved taking trips to Atlantic City and vacationing with his friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the New York City Fire Department Burn Unit, 21 Asch Loop, Bronx, NY 10475.
A private cremation is scheduled, with a memorial to be held at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to Matthew Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc.
