Lucile Flatt Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 18, 2012.
Lucile Flatt January 30, 1910 – May 15, 2012 102 Years Old. Marjorie Lucile was born on the Pratt family farm in Anita, Iowa, to Clyde Jerome Pratt and Myrtle Louise (Alexander) Pratt. The doctor who delivered her arrived by horse and buggy. Several years later, her father moved the family to Gillett Grove, Iowa, where he bought a General Store. Lucile loved playing in the flour bin and eating the stick candy that they sold. At the age of nine years old, they moved to Paoli, Colorado, where her father owned a wheat farm. She walked one and three quarter miles across the prairie to a one-room country schoolhouse. Lucile went to the neighboring town to attend high school. She had to stay in a dormitory during the week, as it was too far to go home each night. She graduated from Holyoke High School in 1927, and spent a year working to save enough money to continue her education. With the money she earned and a scholarship, she was able to attend Colorado Women's College (CWC) in Denver, CO. During her second year there, Lucile's classmates voted her May Queen, and her picture was in the Denver Post. She graduated from CWC in 1930, with an Associate Degree in Science. Lucile then went on to Colorado Agriculture and Mechanical College in Ft. Collins, CO. She majored in Home Economics, was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta social sorority, and received her 75-year membership pin in 2006. She was also nominated for membership in Omicron Nu, an academic honorary sorority for Home Economics majors. She graduated from Colorado A & M with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1932. Lucile's first job after graduation, was as a teacher in a one-room country schoolhouse. She taught grades one through eight and had eight students in her classes. She prepared the eigth graders to take, and hopefully pass, the county tests, so they could enter high school. While in Ft. Collins, Lucile met and married David Enos Flatt on June 28th, 1934. They set up housekeeping in Sheridan, Wyoming. In 1937, their daughter, Mary Lou, was born. A year and a half later, they moved to Denver, CO, and then to Durango, CO, where their son, David Clyde, was born in 1940. In 1941, they moved to Grand Junction, CO, where their daughter, Patty Ann, was born in 1944. After living in Grand Junction for five years they moved to Paonia, CO. Lucile taught third grade for two years, and was also a Brownie Scout Leader. They returned to Grand Junction in 1950. Lucile was a 60 year member of the First United Methodist Church. She was active in the Women's Society Of Christian Service. She held every office through her years of service, and also held several District Offices. She was awarded a 50-year membership certificate and received an Outstanding Service Award. To the family of Lucille Flatt, I am so sorry for your loss. My parents, Clarence and Ethel Snyder and myself were active members of the First Methodist church and I remember your parents well. My parents were also member of Sunshine Chapter Order of Eastern Star with your parents. Your Mother was a dear sweet lady and may she forever rest in peace with our Lord and Savior. May God give the family comfort and strength during this time.
