Lucille Burgess

Lucille Burgess, 96, Mitchell, passed away at 2:45 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8, 2010, at Garden Villa, Bedford.
Mrs. Burgess was a graduate of Orleans High School in the Class of 1930 and attended business college in Denver, Colo. She was a homemaker and worked at Mitchell's Riley School and Bell's Mendit Shop. She was a member of First Christian Church in Mitchell, Fleur-de-Lis and served as a Girl Scout leader and room mother. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, crafting and lovingly caring for her family.
Born Nov. 6, 1913, in Crawford County, she was the daughter of Ed and Agnes Roberson Velecin, both of whom preceded her in death. On April 5, 1934, she married Merrill Charles Burgess, who preceded her in death July 13, 1969.
Survivors include two sons, Charles Edwin (Ann) Burgess and William E. (Marie) Burgess, DDS, both of Brownstown; two daughters, Barbara Ann (Dr. George) Sorrells, Mitchell, and Marilyn Jean (Jerry) Sadek, Bedford; sister, Ruth Stalcup, Paoli; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Kowalczyk, and a grandson, Kevin Burgess.
The Rev. Robert Dailey will conduct funeral services at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home, Mitchell. Burial will take place at Mitchell Cemetery.
Friends may call from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and from 9:30 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the funeral home.
The family wishes to acknowledge the love and care by the staff of Garden Villa and all of her personal caregivers.
Memorials may be given to Mitchell First Christian Church or Mitchell Community Schools Scholarship Foundation.
