Lude Check Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 13, 2009.
CHECK, Lude May 22, 1918 - May 11, 2009 With sadness we announce the passing of our beloved Dad, at the age of 91, on Monday May 11, 2009 at the Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus. He was the loving husband of the late Eleanor for 63 years. Predeceased by his sisters Bernice and Sophie and brothers Joe and Frank. Paddle wielding but loving father of Donna, Stephen (Patty) and Ken (Kathy). Mischievous and loving "Gramps" and "Grandpa" to Chris, Kim (Corey), Stephanie (Dan), Stuart and Maggie. Dad started his hockey career with the Junior Brandon Wheat Kings. He then went on to play a season with the Chicago Blackhawks and finished his career with the Ottawa Senators winning the Allan Cup in 1949. After hockey he went to work for Hiram Walkers for over 30 years. On one hand he will be missed by many but on the other hand greeted by cherished old friends. Sincere thanks are extended to the caregivers at Lord Lansdowne for their wonderful care. Special thanks are also extended to Pauline Regan and to the Miller family for their love and support of "Ludie" and Donna over a very difficult period. A Mass in Memory of Lude will be held at St. Maurice's Church, Perry St. at Meadowlands, Thursday May 14, 2009 at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow. Donations to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Dear Donna and Family

When they were working together at Hiram Walker, I fondly remember the good times Lude and my father Lou Megaffin would have when they often got together.

Even in retirment both Lude and Lou would head to the Fort Erie Race Track when your Dad was in town.

Sympathy to you and your family.

Dear Donna and Family:

We have truly lost one of the 'great ones'.

Lude was a such a wonderful human soul - I worked with him at Hiram Walker for many years. Whenever he came to visit with us in Toronto (or we went to Ottawa) you could always count on lots of excitement, fun and mostly laughter. He had a wealth of good friends, colleagues and especially a wonderful close knit family. He always talked of them .
We looked upon him as a true celebrity in our nation's capital with much better connections than most politicians.

He will be missed by us all but we can take solace in that he was truly blessed with a long and most fruitful life.

Remember all the great times with Lude through this time of mourning and my sympathy to the entire family,
Marty Fruchtman

We will miss Uncle Lude. He was always a "character" to us MacIntyre girls. He would mix up our names on purpose just to get a reaction! We were in awe of him. As with our loving and gentle Auntie Eleanor we mourn the passing of someone close to us, who will always be in our memories.

our deepest condolences to the Check family. Even though I did not have a chance to meet Mr. Check, my wife, Eliana Gelinstiques, was the one taking special care of him at Landsdowne and I still remember all the stories she would tell me on a daily basis about "Lude" and how much he loved his ice cream! I am certain he will be deeply missed. He was for sure one of her favorites, especially after she learned they were born on the exact same day! Coincidence? I do not think so...
