Luis Cuevas Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 16, 2025.
Luis Hernando "Nando" Cuevas, Sr., age 98, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2025, at Avow Hospice in Naples, Florida, surrounded by his children. Born on July 19, 1926, in Bogotá, Colombia and raised in Tocaima, Luis lived a long and meaningful life centered on faith and family.

Luis studied in Bogotá, Colombia, where he specialized in veterinary medicine for large-breed animals. Through hard work and dedication , he built the foundation for a life defined by integrity and care for others-values that remained with him throughout his life.

In 1965, Luis made the courageous decision to move his family to the United States in pursuit of better opportunities for his family. He dedicated his career to working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) as a Veterinarian Meat Inspector until his retirement in 2000.

Luis was a devoted husband to his late wife, Himera DeCastro Cuevas, and a loving father to his daughters, Maria Fernanda Cuevas and Adriana Cuevas Nelson; his son, Luis Hernando Cuevas, Jr.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren, with one more on the way. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Jose Luis Cuevas.

Those who knew Luis will remember his unwavering faith, quiet wisdom, and sharp wit - gifts he shared through both his words and actions. He believed deeply in the strength of family and in standing together through life's challenges. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched and the generations he helped shape.

A funeral mass will be held on Monday, July 28, 2025 at St. Peter Catholic Church, 5130 Rattlesnake Hammock Rd, Naples, Florida at 10:00 am.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in Luis & Himera Cuevas' name to Avow Hospice, Naples, Florida.

One of Luis' favorite quotes is 'Recordar es Vivir', which translates to 'Remembering is Living'. May his memory bring comfort to all who loved him and he continue to live in our hearts.

It saddened me to hear of Papi's passing. The words "gentle soul" come to mind when I remember Luis. We had many good talks over the last 40 plus years at many different venues. Luis was a good man from a great generation. They certainly don't make them like that anymore and so very few are left. May you rest in peace, and may your family be consoled that you are in Christ's care now.
