Lujo Moretti Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 19 to Apr. 22, 2007.
Moretti, Lujo "Louie"
Lujo "Louie" Moretti, 81, of San Pedro, California, died April 17, 2007 at his home with his wife by his side. He was the 7th child born to Matok and Kate Moretti on September 22, 1925 in Cavtat, Croatia. In 1948, Lujo graduated from the Nautical Academy in Dubrovnik, Croatia. After being held several months in a Communist work camp in post WWII Yugoslavia, he fled with a friend on a small boat across the Adriatic, where he was picked up by an Italian cargo ship. He spent 3 months living in a refugee camp in Italy, and later moved to Canada, where he lived for 12 years. Between 1951 and 1953, he worked on the hydro-electric dam project in Kemano, British Columbia, and later worked for 5 years on several vessels as a Second Officer, where he sailed around the globe many times over. While visiting a cousin in San Pedro in 1962, he met his future wife, Violet Ursich. For the next 25 years, Lujo worked as a longshoreman and was a proud member of ILWU Locals 13 and 94, raising his two daughters, Marilyn and Kathy. After retirement, he spent his later years planting fruit trees, grapes, and vegetables at his second home in Wildomar, California, alongside his beloved dog, Lero. He also enjoyed creating things in his workshop out of wood. Lujo is survived by Violet, his devoted wife of 44 years, and his daughters, Marilyn (Frank) Malkoc and Kathy Fordiani. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Bianca Malkoc, Gabriella and Brandon Fordiani; and by nephews, Mato Moretti of Cavtat, Croatia, Jakoy Moretti of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; nieces, Antonia Moretti-Smith of New Mexico, Erwine Herguth of Bregens, Germany, and Ana-Nusa Crone of Schalksmuhle, Germany.
