Luke Gurney Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 23, 2016.
Luke Leonard Luscomb Gurney passed away on June 20, 20116. He lived life to the fullest and was the "best'' husband, father, son and friend that anyone would want. Since 2009 he has fished commercially for whelk (conch), sea bass and scup in waters surrounding the Vineyard and Nantucket. Prior to that date and in the off season, he worked as skilled carpenter with many builders as well as for himself all over the Vineyard. In 2012 he purchased and captained his own vessel, a 42 ft. Nova Scotia built lobster vessel, The "No Regrets" and continued fishing the same waters. He has lived on the Vineyard since 1994 but to anyone who knew him he was a "born and bred Islander". He had a passion for fishing and was the best at it according to his peers.

However, more than fishing he loved his family with all his heart. His wife, Robyn Gurney and his two sons, Jacob and Sam loved him and will miss him dearly.

He is also survived by his parents John and Linda Gurney, his sister Mary Gurney-Sylvia and her husband David Sylvia and their children, Grace, Luke, Meredith and Mairwen, his brother Joshua Gurney, his children Sophie and Elliot.

Most people have a significant number of friends that they have embraced over a life time. Some are close and others are friends you see once in a while. Luke's circle of friends was immense. Luke was known and loved by all whom he came in contact with. His infectious smile, adventurous spirit, positive attitude and genuinely caring personality had touched so many. From his friends testimony, they were the lucky ones and beneficiary of their relationship with Luke. Over and over the love for him has poured out of their souls. Whether they knew him after one contact or hundreds they all were made to feel like they were a "best friend". He was a special personality.

Luke graduated from the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine in Marine Science in 1994. He was on the Board of the Martha's Vineyard Fishermen's Preservation Trust.

His wake is scheduled for Saturday, June 25, 2016 at Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford. Hours are 2-6pm. In addition, a Celebration of his Life is scheduled on July 2, 2016 on the Vineyard at the P-A Club on Vineyard Avenue in Oak Bluffs at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to https://www.youcaring.com/robyn-jacob-and-samuel-gurney-589549. www.rock-funeralhome.com for online tribute/directions.

Uncle Jon and Aunt Linda I am so sorry for your loss. I remember going over to your house on the pond as a kid and hanging out with Luke and Josh and Mary and having fun on the dock in the summer and ice skating in the winter. As the years went by and we grew up we all went our different ways and that was unfortunate, and I wish I would of kept up with him because I always had fun with him and Josh and Mary and the world has truly lost a great person. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you and again I am truly sorry. Love Jon Gurney

Sorry for your loss. I had the pleasure of knowing Luke in the fishing community. He was a very hard working man who loved his family immensely. Luke was also a strong advocate for the fishing community. All of his family and closest friends will remain in our prayers dealing with this great loss of such a wonderful man that will never be forgotten. The way he embraced life and people, was amazing. He will continue to watch over his loved ones in heaven. All our Love, Todd and Susan (Martha's Vineyard)

Words cannot express how saddened I am to hear of Luke's passing. Condolences to Robyn, Jacob, Samuel and the entire Gurney family.Luke was a kind, authentic person. I knew him in the "high school years" and I was one of many who was lucky enough to have called him my friend. I will cherish the memories I have... always. He was a truly genuine soul.

Everyone I know, in Indiana and Massachusetts, loved Luke. He came to Indiana, along with my Brother, and my Nephews, to help me build our house. My mother, Mary, loved him like he was one of her own. His smile, and his generosity will be missed by anyone who knew him. R.I.P. my friend. Loveya

Luke was good friends with my sister many years ago, and was like a member of the family. His warm smile and CURLS will always be cherished memories, but his giving heart is what I will remember most. God bless you.

My deepest condolences to Luke's whole family. Although I had not seen him in many years, I went to Junior High at Normandin and then at NB High we were also in the same home room. As everyone else has mentioned he was a great guy and loved to laugh. Many people have fond memories of him even after many years.
