Hampton, VA
Luther Riley Gartrell "Luke" of Hampton, VA., formerly of Raleigh, died after a brief illness, on July 26, 2012, surrounded by his family. He was the 4th of 9 children born to the late Carl W. and the late Katie Cofer Gartrell. Luke graduated from J. W. Ligon H.S. then from NC A&T State Univ. with a BS in Electrical Engineering. His engineering career was spent as an Aerospace Engineer with NASA at Langley Airforce Base in Hampton, VA. While at NASA, Luke earned an MS degree in Engineering at Old Dominion University. He published many articles while at NASA (google Luther R Gartrell NASA).
Survivors include: daughters Bridgett Gartrell-Madden and Gina Gartrell-Sedlack; grandchildren, Celina Luccioni, Christian Gartrell, Kenneth Sedlack, and Jacob Madden all of VA; sisters Laura G. Milliken of Raleigh and Doris G. Jones of Colorado; brothers George (Carol) and Willie Gartrell of Raleigh. Luke was predeceased by brothers: Boykin, Carl Jr., James, and Fred Gartrell.
A memorial service was held in VA on Saturday, August 11th. The family will receive friends in Raleigh on Saturday, August 18th from 2-4pm at the home of his devoted sister-in-law Ruth Gartrell, 1114 N. State Street. Condolences to guest book: dailypress.com/obituaries.
