Lyla Owen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 9 to Feb. 14, 2018.
On February 7, 2018 Lyla took her last curtain call at the Passages Hospice. She had been homebound for several years due to a progressive illness, under the loving and attentive care of her devoted daughter Robin Owen. She will be long remembered and cherished by countless students, fans, friends and wonderful artistic theatrical collaborators. Known for her forthright opinions and high style celebratory nature, she was also respected and admired for her many decades of contribution to film and stage. A serious student of New Orleans history, her book on the "Creoles of New Orleans" was published in 1987. She was a creative force of great magnitude and made her mark in film, on stage and in several public schools as she guided her precious students in the Talented in Theatre programs. She especially enjoyed cabaret singing, often with daughter Cynthia Owen, events that can only be described as Diva-licious!!!, and delighted in using her sultry vocal stylings in the performance of her favorite "La Vie en Rose" in French; Paris was a favorite travel destination and she went frequently. Her film credits include "Hard Times" in 1975, "Everybody's All American" in 1988 and "Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles" in 1994. She wrote the book and music for several delightful and innovative plays for The Children's Corner at Le Petit Theatre, and also co-wrote "Looney Blues" which was presented at the People Playhouse. She co-founded that theatre in the early 1970s and presented many of her original works there over the years. In 1989, at the annual Big Easy Awards, she merited a Best Actress award for her work in "The Rose Tattoo" and the large body of work that she shared with us was honored in 1998 with a Lifetime Achievement Award. As hard as it is to say goodbye to such a bright light, the memory of the often wild times shared with her will bring joyful smiles and gratitude for the ways in which she shared her creative genius. She is survived by daughter Robin Owen, son Dr. Richard Shapiro and sister Frances Middleton. Private arrangements will be made through Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home and a celebration of her life and work will be done at a later memorial service. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to either WYES-TV or the Tipitina Foundation in her honor. ARRANGEMENTS BY JACOB SCHOEN & SON FUNERAL HOME. Condolences may be left at www.schoenfh.com.

Très triste d'apprendre la mort de Lyla. Nous partagions la même salle de classe en 1993/1994 , à Lusher school, New -Orléans. ( Sur Carrolton) Talentueuse, elle aimait la France et Paris .

Lyla was indeed a force of nature and the theatre. She spoke her mind. You always heard the truth from Lyla. I worked with her in the early People Playhouse days and we did many of her quirky, ferocious and very funny plays. She was gifted in so many was, but the thing I remember the most was her humor. It was always there so wacky and unexpected. It carried her and those around her through the hard times and celebrated the good. She was a true New Orleans treasure and I can never think of that wonderful city without thinking of Lyla. I will miss her presence always. Kathy Mullen

My heart is scarred yet again, to learn of the passing of such a beautiful soul. She is the greatest Theatre Teacher one could encounter. She was my high school Theatre Teacher at Warren Easton Charter High School. She is the reason why I fell in love with Theatre. She is the reason I started working at Warren Easton as the Theatre teacher. When she retired she passed her torch to me and I will continue to carry it.

Lyla was what you would call a "natural" actor. Her expressivity sprang from human source. Through the years, she & I had many wide-ranging conversations, which supported me in continually renewing theatre intelligence.

I am so sorry, Robin. My deepest condolences. Your mom was very kind to me in my youth, and I will always appreciate her work on stage and her book on Creoles. Her loss is very significant as to the culture of my beloved city. Much love to you.

The days of People Playhouse at the Puppet Playhouse were vibrant fun times. Lyla was a real force in New Orleans theatre. Sad to see her leave us.

Lyla Hay Owen was a professional at everything she turned her hand to: acting, playwriting (especially children's plays), teaching.
She was also a colorful presence on the New Orleans entertainment scene for four decades.
Everyone she ever came into contact with has at least one or more "Lyla stories." No remembrance of her would be complete without mention of her uber-theatrical sense of humor. She was a down-home diva: sophisticated, gutsy and great fun.

Please accept my sincere heartfelt condolences to the Owen family and friends for your immeasurable loss of your dear beloved. Losing a loved one in death is never easy. One day many will have the opportunity to live again. May the hope of everlasting life sustain and comfort you during this difficult time (John 17:3). When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure in your heart and it lives forever. May the wonderful treasures fill your hearts with love and bring you peace. LD-Rex, Ga
