Lyle Campbell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 16 to Feb. 19, 2022.
Dr. Lyle Anthony Campbell was born in Chicago, Illinois on July 14, 1965, to Drs. Lynn and Joan Reed Campbell. At a young age, Lyle accepted Christ. Lyle spent his early years in Chicago, Illinois and Huntington, New York. At age seven, his family relocated to San Juan, Puerto Rico, where he completed his elementary and secondary education at Antilles Consolidated School System located on Fort Buchanan. Lyle excelled academically, and in sports, and drama throughout his schooling. He graduated from Antilles High School with high honors and received a four-year academic scholarship to Dillard University. While at Dillard, Lyle distinguished himself as a high academic achiever and maintained honors throughout his college years. In his senior year, he was elected President of the Beta Phi chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He had the honor of being selected by Dr. Samuel DuBois Cook, President of Dillard University, to serve as a student marshal for his 1987 graduating class. Lyle graduated cum laude, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree with a focus on medicine. Lyle was admitted to the Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, DC, where he completed Medical School and a Residency in Emergency Medicine. Lyle lived and worked in the DC area for over 30 years, serving his community as an Emergency Medicine Physician on the staffs of many different hospitals. In 2019, Lyle relocated to the US Virgin Island of St. Croix. There he joined his brother, Dr. Lyn A. Campbell, Jr., to form the physician duo responsible for the Acute Alternative Medical Group, which is the largest urgent care medicine practice on the island of St. Croix. Lyle was a healthy man who didn't smoke, yet he developed a rare form of lung cancer. Even while battling this illness, his strength of character showed through as he maintained the same optimism, determination (stubbornness) and zest for life that everyone who met him remembers. On Tuesday, February 1, 2022, in the early morning hours, heaven was made richer as God called Lyle to his heavenly home. He was 56. It is difficult to put into words what the meaning of life meant to Lyle, this remarkable and loving man. His life can be measured by the way he touched and influenced the lives of others, especially his family and friends. Lyle distinguished himself with many accomplishments, but he was most proud of his family. His devotion to them was one of his finest attributes. Lyle was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Lynn A. Campbell, Sr. He leaves cherishing memories to his devoted mother, Dr. Joan Reed Campbell; sister, Lauryn Campbell; brother, Dr. Lyn A. Campbell Jr.; sister-in-law, Barbara Campbell; niece, Brianna Campbell; four uncles; Samuel George Reed, John Frank Campbell, Roosevelt Campbell, Clarence Andrews and two aunts; Carolyn Reed and Maryjo Andrews and a host of cousins and friends. Relatives and friends are invited to attend Lyle's celebration of life services on Saturday, February 19 at 11:00 am at Mount Zion Methodist Church, 2722 Louisiana Ave. NOLA. Visitation will be held from 9:00-11:00. Interment Providence Park Cemetery, Metairie, LA. Services Entrusted to the Caring Staff of: Professional Funeral Services "Celebrating Life" 1449 N. Sadly we were not able to know Lyle as an adult. That would have been a blessing. He was a wonderful young man and grew into a great man.

Dear Joan,
We were so very sorry to learn of the passing of Lyle.
Our connections with you and your family have meant a great deal to us over many years. We remember the many times we have done things together in work and play. Thank you again for that last retirement party. We also were grateful for a chance to meet your mother. What a wonderful lady.
We loved and appreciated your children. They were the type of students that would make a teacher want to get out of bed in the morning and go to school. I remember when you told them to take my after school West African History Class. I believe they all showed up for every session and were active participants.
The use they made of what they learned in school made us so proud, two doctors and a teacher. All noble professions. I realize we played only a small role, but it was good to have done so. In times when I need comfort, they remain an inspiration for me.
We will miss Lyle. Not in the way that you do, but we will think of him often.
