Lyle Stephens Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 27, 2020.
Our sweet Daddy, Lyle V. Stephens slipped away from this earthy life August 17, 2020 to join his Heavenly Father, his mom and dad, brother, and cousins whom he missed so very much. Lyle passed away just short of his 95th birthday. He was born at home in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho to Elton Stephens and Hattie (Pratt) Stephens and a brother, Orland Stephens. The family later moved to Kellogg, Idaho where Lyle attended school and graduated. Lyle was a World War II Veteran. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the US Merchant Marines (Army Transport Corp) and spent most of his service time in the South Pacific. As he would tell it, he had his diploma in one hand and military papers in the other. Being a US Merchant Marine and serving his country during WWII was a great honor for Lyle and he shared many stories of his time serving. One story was when Lyle was at the helm and in control of the ship. It was during a storm and ""blackout"" because of enemy ships in the area. When his shift was over and he went down to his hammock, his shoes were floating around in the water. After serving his country, Lyle spent some time in San Francisco, CA where he worked as a valet. He shared stories of meeting and parking the cars of rich and famous people and getting tipped very well. After spending some time in San Francisco, he bought a car and went sight-seeing back home to Idaho where he met his wife. Together they had seven children. First, five children: Terry, Kathie, Karen, Kay, and Timothy, then ten years later they added to their family two more sweet little girls: Kimberly and Kristie. Family was everything to Lyle and everything he did was for his family. Lyle loved to build and he pretty much built onto every home he owned. He built rooms on one home so each one of his children had their own bedroom. Lyle made sure he took care of his family. He stopped to get bread and milk nearly every night after work. One night while stopping by his usual grocery store, the store was robbed. Lyle had just cashed his weekly pay check. Thankfully the robber took the till money and left Lyle with his own money. Throughout Lyle's lifetime, he worked many different jobs including shoveling coal at 25¢ an hour, mining, digging a well by hand, working at the Magnesium Plant, and lastly as a furnace repairman at Rocksprings Fuel, McGowan Fuel, Appleway, Boyle, then Banner Fuel Company where he retired. Lyle could fix almost anything and was one of the best repairmen. Lyle served as a Teamster Union Representative, belonged to the Eagles, and Independent Order of Foresters (IOF). Lyle enjoyed camping and traveling and took his family on numerous summer trips in their blue Plymouth station wagon with electric windows, and later the white panel van. He wanted to make sure his children got to see the country side that he so much enjoyed. Places he took them included to the California Red Woods and Ocean, Mount Shasta and Crater Lake, Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone, as far as Missouri, Texas, Mexico, and Canada. One of his daughters shared ""Things my Daddy loved"" ~ the ocean, light houses, thunderstorms, fishing, peach pie, vanilla ice cream, Zips and Dicks fish, coffee, a cold Pepsi, Sunday drives, plums from my tree, a good joke, and the list goes on. Another daughter shared memories of ""sitting on Daddy's lap watching Bonanza on Sunday nights"". Lyle loved his Lord and Savior and as he needed more help and had more caregivers, he'd share his faith with them. He noted, ""This might be the only time they hear about getting saved."" As Lyle was passing away, God gave us a beautiful sunset that several of his children shared from the Tri Cities to Spokane. Later early in the morning, there was a gentle rain reassuring us that he was safe with his Heavenly Father and family. Lyle gave a good fight for life right up to the end. He was so very torn and did not want to die and leave his children behind. Lyle was a man of character and gave abundantly of himself. Even through the trials of life, he kept a great attitude to the end. We miss him so very much, but are glad that he is no longer suffering. We love you Daddy! Lyle is survived by his seven children, three sons-in-law, numerous grand-children, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. One granddaughter greeted him into heaven who preceded him in death at birth. A private memorial will be held at a later date.

Dad, throughout my life, you were my anchor. I recently found a note that you wrote referring to the Bible verse that says to “Bless those who curse you and pray for those who persecute you”. As you did, Dad, I pray for them. I miss you and your wisdom so incredibly much. Thank you for who you were and for the legacy you left in my life.

Thank you, Heavenly Father for being my anchor and for giving me the gift of my Earthly Father.

I love and miss you every single day, Dad ~ Your Daughter Karen

Happy Birthday in heaven, Dad.
I didn't forget your special day. It's just been really hard with everything that's going on. If you were still with us, you would be celebrating your 99th birthday. When you were going to turn 95, I remember us talking about you having only 5 more years before you'd be 100. I'm so incredibly thankful that I got to share those last years with you. You taugh me so much and I cherish all the time we had together.

I think about you and miss you every single day. Thank you for being my dad and taking time to guide me along in life.

I'm sending love to you in heaven, Dad. ~ Your Daughter Karen

As Memorial Day was approaching, I remembered something Dad would say as loved ones were leaving. "Don't be a stranger"! Pondering Dad's words today, that's how I feel. I don't want to be a stranger standing at the gates of Heaven.

Many look forward to the day that they will be reunited with their loved ones. I know I do. I miss my dad every single day. But, not everyone who says, "Lord, Lord" will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who know Him and have a Personal Relationship with Jesus Christ our Savior will enter into the gates of Heaven.

Dad loved his Lord and Savior and he shared his faith with others right up to the end of his life. He told me, "This might be the only time they hear about getting saved".

As Dad was passing away, God gave us a beautiful sunset. The sky was a brilliant pink. It was so amazing that people stopped and took pictures of it. Later in the early morning, there was a gentle rain that reassured me that Dad was safe with our Lord and Savior and reunited with his family in Heaven.

I know Dad would have never allowed a stranger to move into his home amongst his children and family. Nor will our Heavenly Father. Take the time today to make sure you aren't a stranger to Christ so when you take your last breath, you too will be welcomed into Heaven ~ our Eternal home that Christ prepared for those who are born again and have a relationship with Him.

As Dad always said," Don't be a stranger"!

I miss you, Dad. ~ Daughter, Karen

Sending Hearts To Heaven for Mom and Dad

Dad: Sending Hearts To You And Mom ~ In Heaven. Not a day goes by that I don’t think about you. I miss you every single day. Thank you for who you were and all that you gave not only to me but to our whole family. I remember you used to get Mom a heart box of chocolates for Valentine's Day. You two would get dressed up and you'd take her out to dinner. You and Mom held hands wherever you went. Even on long trips in the car, you two held hands the whole way. I love and miss you, Dad. And Mom, too. ❤❤ Forever in my heart.

Today is your Two Year Anniversary of joining your Heavenly Family. Needless to say, it was an extra hard day for me. It feels like you should still be here. And in a way, I know you are. As I stood alone in the yard thinking about you today, I looked down where I had been standing for some time. There at my feet was a tiny little feather. It was almost white with fluffy down feathers at the base of it. I think it was sent for me, to help comfort me. I will say it again and again, I miss you so very much, Dad! I love you. I'm so glad for the time I got to share with you.
As always,
Your Daughter Karen

Here is a picture of the feather. It is a reminder that our Father in Heaven cares about us. Paraphrased: He collects our tears in a bottle and writes them down in his book. Look at the birds of the air. He provides for them. Aren't we of more value than they are? Our Earthly Father wants to give his children good gifts, how much more will our Heavely Father give His children to those who ask. Thank you Lord for caring about me and bringing me comfort in my time of grief.

Dad, who you were and how you lived your life was and still is a guiding light to me. What a blessing that God gave us YOU to be our dad. Happy Father's Day in Heaven. I love and miss you! Karen

WWII USMM
Gold Medal Act

May 25, 2022

I'm glad this finally happened. My dad passed away knowing that at last, the Merchant Marines of World War II Gold Medal Act had passed. His comment when I told him it had finally passed was, "Too little, too late." With his voice cracking and tears in his eyes, he shared a story about a ship he was supposed to be on, but at the last minute, he was switched to another ship. He later found out the ship he would have been on, was sunk. Still emotional, he told me Merchant Marines suffered the most casualties during World War II. This Act is bitter-sweet. I'm so very happy for the few WW II Merchant Marine Heroes who are still living, who will be honored. I agree with my dad though, "Too little, too late" for so many. From my search, there are only 1,200 to 1,800 World War II Merchant Marines still alive out of 250,000 who served. I thank them all for their service to our country and congratulate them on finally being honored with a medal. They all are indeed Heroes, and my dad is one of them!!

I Love you, Dad! Thank you for all you gave.

Signed by a Proud Daughter of a WW II USMM. ❤

PS: The medals are beautiful! They did an outstanding job on them. #Heaveho!

Reminiscing in 2022
l love and miss you, Dad ~ As Always You Daughter Karen

March 18, 2022

Thinking back to Saint Patrick’s Day last year 2020, the Covid pandemic had just begun. I had no idea what we were in for as a nation or for the world. Even as horrific as the pandemic is, it was a blessing in disguise in some ways, as I was able to be home with my dad rather than working in building. At the time, I didn’t know that it would be the last months of my Dad’s life that I would be spending with him. Saint Patrick's Day 2020, I made sure he was wearing green and teased him that he wouldn’t want to get pinched by his caregivers if he didn’t wear green. We talked about being Irish and what it may have been like living in Ireland during those early years, how and why our ancestors came to America. We pondered Saint Patrick’s life, driving out the snakes from Ireland, the meaning of the shamrock, and the potato famine and how potatoes were a staple in their diet. That conversation led to the conversation of Idaho potatoes as he was raised in Idaho. We talked about his uncle who was a potato farmer and produced potatoes bigger than he had ever seen in his entire life! I can still hear his voice as he described those potatoes. I prepared a mostly green meal with chicken, broccoli, and green mashed potatoes. I had these little papers with Irish Blessings written on them from an event I had attended previously. I read each one of them to my dad. It was an uneventful, peaceful day. Not particularly what you would call a memorable day. But today, it is memorable. I wonder if I would have done things differently had I known it was our last Saint Patrick’s Day together? I miss and think about my dad every day, and although the pandemic is a horrendous thing, it was a blessing in disguise for my dad and I, as it gave us more time together. Reminiscing in 2022

Happy Thanksgiving in Heaven, Dad. I love and miss you today and every day.
~Your Daughter, Karen

November 26, 2021

I thought about you a lot today. I think about you every day. It's my second Thanksgiving without you, Dad. I'm so thankful for all the time we shared together. Life is so very different since you're gone now. I know you would be so disappointed and sad if you were here watching it all happen, but I know you're watching from Heaven. I love and miss you, Dad. Happy Thanksgiving in Heaven!

Although it seems like only yesterday, it was a year ago today that my Dad stepped into Heaven. When I was younger, I used to tell people my Dad knew everything, and I think he really did because If he didn't, he could figure it out. I am so thankful

A year ago today, I didn't know I only had one month left with you. This morning, I woke up to the song "Home" by Chris Tomlin. God knew I needed this song today, as it brought comfort to my heart. I love and miss you Dad. ~Karen

I have not been able to share my Daddy's death on social media as so many people do with their loved ones deaths, and it has taken me this long to be able to visit this site. Even now this brings a flood of tears and emotions to me.
This is a beautiful tribute to Daddy, and I am so very thankful to Karen for doing this. I have so many precious memories of Daddy that it would take pages and pages to share them all.
I am most thankful now that Daddy is not here on this earth that can be so very painful and cruel. I know he is experiencing things I cannot even fathom, with our Father God and Christ Jesus. I know he has a perfect body that is no longer tied to the sorrows and pains of this earth. I know my daughter, Karsen, and our other loved ones greeted him into the Kingdom of Our Father in Heaven. I so long to join you, Daddy, and share in what Jesus has prepared for us. I miss you so much, and I love you forever Daddy. ~Kay
