Lyman Shurtliff Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 10 to Oct. 15, 2015.
Jan. 14, 1924 ~ Oct. 1, 2015
Lyman was the fifth child born to Carlie Redd and Wilford Haskill Shurtliff during the great depression era. From an early age his love of photography could be seen by his purchasing a second hand camera and developing prints in a make-shift dark room. He bypassed the big band sound in favor of classical composers, often enveloping himself in Mahler's symphonies at high volume-much to his wife's chagrin. Throughout his life he studied history and classical literature, and especially loved Shakespeare. Lyman was a modern Renaissance man. He inherited his mother and father's talent in art, and enjoyed painting in his free time. He also loved to write and penned memoirs, as well as several novels. In his later years he enjoyed traveling to Europe to immerse himself in all the history he was so familiar with. Largely self-motivated, he developed and continually refined his skills and talents, and set a high standard of accomplishment for his family and others who knew him.
Lyman served in the Philippines during WWII as part of a clandestine radar operation in Luzon and witnessed many trials of Japanese commanders charged with war crimes. After the war ended Lyman began working at Fort Douglas while attending the University of Utah. In a Zoology class he met a young woman who drove a brand new red convertible and played a mean set of tennis, Norma Crompton. She later became his wife and the mother of his three daughters; Marque, Carlie and Jen. In 1957, Lyman graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in medicine and later completed a specialty in pathology. He maintained a private practice in Bountiful, Utah for many years until his retirement.
Lyman never shied away from a healthy debate, and the family candlelight dinners were a training ground for his children's oratory skills. He was a gentleman, a fair-minded judge and diplomat in navigating family issues and the kind of father who spent evenings reading the Iliad & Odyssey to his children. Lyman will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held at the Garner Funeral Home (City View Memoriam) Oct 16th at 12 noon; 1001 11th Ave, Salt Lake City, UT 84103.

Dr. Shurtliff was always so kind to me when I was a kid. It was so nice to go to the Shurtliff home. I was a friend of Marque's and neither he or Mrs. Shurtliff made me feel out of place. This is a lovely tribute.

Lyman was my doctor many years ago. He did a great job in keeping our family healthy. My condolences.

What a lovely tribute. It was good to learn a little more about Uncle Lyman. Thank you for the glimpse into your family. I recall visiting his office in Bountiful during my first pregnancy (while I was visiting family). He was very professional and kind. May the Lord comfort you in your loss.
