Lynn Shearman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 29, 2025.
Lynn Wilson Shearman (née Marilyn "Lynn" Carol Hill), 96, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 13, 2024, in Vero Beach, Florida, where she had resided for the past 25 years. Born on July 8, 1928, in Oak Park, Illinois, Lynn was the only child of George C. Hill and Nell Hill (née Viritisch). She spent her early years in Oak Park and attended Oak Park High School.

Lynn was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Joseph Wilson, whom she married on January 21, 1950, and her second husband, Thomas B. Shearman, whom she married on November 25, 1992. She was a mother of eight children: Scott (Denise), Mark (Laura), Todd (Debbie), Amy, Ward (Edward), Brian (Margaret), John (deceased 1961) and Eric (Lynda). She also leaves behind fifteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Lynn's life was defined by her commitment to family, community, and a wide array of interests. After marrying Bob, she dedicated herself to raising their seven children while actively contributing to her community in Elmhurst, Illinois. She volunteered as the "Picture Lady" at the local elementary school and played a pivotal role in establishing a learning center and educational resource room at her children's parochial grammar school. A strong advocate for women's rights, Lynn canvassed for women in politics and championed the Equal Rights Amendment. She poured her energy into producing the "Shop Talk" and "Observer Reports" newsletters for the League of Women Voters for nearly two decades.

When her youngest child started school, Lynn joined Bob in managing their business, Circle Hardware, where she excelled in overseeing the decorative hardware department. After Bob's passing, Lynn reconnected with Tom at a high school reunion. They married in 1992 and eventually settled in Vero Beach. Lynn read avidly, loved gardening, found joy in bird-watching by their pond, and delighted in creating intricately embroidered pillows and framed art. Her dedication to service earned her multiple "Volunteer of the Year" awards from the Mental Health Association in Indian River County.

Together, Tom and Lynn hosted family and friends at their John's Island condominiums, sharing the beach and ocean that offered nature and respite. Her adventurous spirit took her around the world to visit museums, explore nature, and enjoy the cultures of many countries, such as Japan, China, Kenya, Brazil, numerous European countries, and even Antarctica.

Lynn lived a rich and fulfilling life. She will be missed by all who loved her.

I am deeply grateful for all the things in life I learned to appreciate from Mom. She had a passionate eye for the natural world, whether it was the birds at her feeders, the insects, animals, and plants she marveled at in the Galapagos, on safari, or in botanical gardens. She was endlessly curious, always asking questions about what she observed and sharing her sense of wonder with us, her children. Through her, I discovered a love for art, Broadway plays, the vibrant energy of New York City, traveling to far-off places, jigsaw puzzles, little boxes, and reading good books. When I look in the mirror, I see how else she has passed her on to me - in my looks, my expressions, and high level of energy. I am grateful to carry so many good pieces of Mom with me. Though I wish I could continue sharing these moments with her, I feel incredibly lucky to have had her in my life for as long as I did.
