Published by Legacy Remembers on May 20, 2008.
O'GRADY, M. James BORN: July 25, 1936, Timmins, Ontario
It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden death of the beloved husband of Helen Alexiade O'Grady and cherished father of James (Jamey) O'Grady. His devotion to our small family was surpassed only by his generous spirit which will always be with us. Jim was loved and respected as a brother by Colleen (Lawrence Dumville), Faye (Don Kuiak) and Ken (Marlene Binnie). He was pre-deceased by his parents Mary Redmond and Harold and by his brother Terry. He was loved as a brother-in-law by Maria and Tasso Karkazis, Ariadne and Howard Gribble and Anne Notof; and as an uncle to many from Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia and California. Born in Timmins Ontario in 1936, Jim grew up in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec. He was both a star athlete and an outstanding student in his youth, winning the All-Ontario Midget AAA Championship with the Noranda Toilers in 1951-52. He enjoyed full scholarships to Queen's University, Arts '57 and Law '61 and was awarded a Viscount Bennett Scholarship to The Harvard Law School (LL.M. '63). Before starting his legal practice, Jim was the Special Assistant to the Solicitor General of Canada, the Honourable Larry Pennel. For 46 years he practiced law in Ottawa with Solway, Wright, Houston, Greenberg, O'Grady & Morin and O'Grady & Associate. At the time of his death he was practicing with the firm of Burke-Robertson. In 1998 he was elected a Fellow of The American College of Trial Lawyers. His career as a lawyer was characterized by the highest standards of professionalism, respect for those in need and unwavering dedication to his chosen profession. His service to the community included the office of President of the Consumers Association of Canada and a member of the Executive Committee of the International Organization of Consumers Unions. He was a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation Board of Arbitration. Jims love of hockey was legendary including over 15 years as a coach in the Nepean Minor Hockey Association and a lifetime of preparation for the NHL. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, Ottawa on Thursday May 22, 2008, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Funeral Mass will be held at Notre Dame Cathedral, Sussex at St. Patrick on Friday, May 23, 2008 at 10:30 am. Interment to follow at Pinecrest Cemetery. Donations in Jim's memory to a charity of your choice.

Jamie,

I was very sad to hear of your father's passing. I have delightful memories of our youth playing hockey together under your dad's coaching. Your dad’s patient, caring, and devotion to our teams made it a family year after year.
Very best wishes to you and your mom.

Dear Mrs O'Grady and Jamie,

Just a short note to say how very saddened I was to learn that Jim has passed away.

He was a terrific lawyer and everyone who knew him was better off as a result.

I met him in the early 70s when he was acting for the Consumers Association of Canada and many times since.

Let us tell others of the things he said and the things he taught and the things that he did, and he will live forever here, as he will with the church.

Jamie and Mrs. O'Grady my family and I want to express our sincere condolences.

Jim was a person to look up to growing up as a kid having him as coach. I often try and model myself after his coaching style with the teams I coach. He was a great person and will be sadly missed.

You both are in our thoughts and prayers at this time. Please take care!

Jamey,
I was so deeply sorry to learn of your father's death. I can see him so clearly on the day we all went skating. He looked so happy, healthy and full of life. Subsequently, I had a chance to talk with him at one of the Harvard chapter lunches. He was a delightful, kind person and I only wish I had known him more.
Both my husband and I send our deepest sympathy, prayers and love to you and your mother on the loss of a very wonderful person.
I will keep in touch and hope to see you soon.
With affection,
Penny Collenette

Jamey and Helen...my most sincere condolences. To this day, when I think hockey, I think of Jim and our teams, as a player and then as a coach with him. Please know his energy spent in minor hockey gave me and my Dad some of our best memories. Thank you for sharing Jim with our family.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Jim's passing. When I was a young lawyer practicing on my own Jim generously shared with me both his knowledge and his example as a man of integrity. He lives on in all of us who were fortunate enough to have met him.

My deepest sympathy to Helen and family. I knew Jim at Queens, and we had some wonderful times later at Carleton setting up the Department of Law where I taught, when he was the only part-time teacher there.
