Mabel West Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 22, 2008.
WEST, Mabel (nee Grawbarger) It is with great sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Mabel Julia on Friday, November 21, 2008 in her 93rd year, at St. Vincent's Hospital. Over her lifetime, Mabel was an active member of the South March Community. In her own way she silently helped others and expected nothing in return. Her door was always open to those in need, she spent a great many years donating her knitted mittens, socks, and infant items for premature babies. When she had a stroke in May 2005 she fought and found her independence, when she was diagnosed with cancer in December 2006 she forged on with her battle for life. In our loss, we know Mabel finally rests. Predeceased by her loving husband Fredrick Walter in 1972 and her dear children, Evelyn in 1994 (Royce Forrest-2007), June in 2000 (George "Cliff" Belaire -1995), Fred in 2004 (Fran Marcil-1999), Peter in 2001 (Wendy Macalum) and George in 1977. She is now solely survived by her daughter Dorothy (Ralph Lessard). A grandmother to three generations of grandchildren. Daughter of the late Catherine (Gardiner) and Peter Grawbarger. Also survived by siblings Kay (Kathleen), Ellie (Eleanor) and John. Predeceased by siblings George, Pearl, Beatrice, Muriel, Andrew, Ida, Mertle, William, Mern, and Stanley. She also leaves many nieces and nephews. A special thank you to all levels of staff members of St. Vincent's Hospital who showed Mabel care, respect and compassion in her stay there and to the family members that showed their love, kindness and support in her final years. Friends may call at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Road, Nepean (between Bayshore Dr. and Baseline Rd.) on Sunday 1 - 3 & 7 - 9 pm. Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel on Monday at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at St. John's Anglican Church Cemetery in spring 2009. For those wishing, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society.

Dear family of Mabel West;
My Grandmother, Mabel Younghusband was a friend of Mabel West's. In 1990, when I was expecting our first child, my mother Freda Younghusband took Grandma to Mabel Wests house to see about a baby shawl, as Mabel West's knitting skills were legend. And although Mabel was old at the time, she created a shawl that I still cherish . Its pure white , exquisitely knitted with delicate little points all around the outside. We used it through 5 christenings. I have written down what I know about Mabel, including her obituary to keep with the shawl, now a family keepsake. It is a reminder of the steadfast friendships and capability of the ladies of South March.
