Malcolm DeWitt Grain - Obituary 11-10-33 to 11-8-22

Malcolm DeWitt Grain was born Nov. 10, 1933 to Mr. and Mrs. Dorothy Clark Grain and Walter F. Grain Sr. in Louisville, KY. He was a member of "Jack and Jill of America" with his siblings. He graduated from Howard University with a degree in Architecture where he married his college sweetheart, Carolyn Futrell Grain and had three children, Shawn Grain Carter, Dr. Kirk Grain, and Todd M. Grain. He served in the Korean War with distinction and returned home to raise a family with his wife on Long Island in New York.

His college mentor, the distinguished architect, Paul Revere Williams trained Malcolm as a student. In a successful career at the NY & NJ Port Authority Architect team, he helped design the World Trade Center commonly known as the "Twin Towers." In addition, he helped design the SST airplane and first 747 transatlantic jet. He also helped to design the Newark Liberty Airport extension and subsequently was recruited to work with the legendary I. M. Pei where he maintained a lifelong friendship with his second mentor until he died in 2019. After his storied career at I.M. Pei in Manhattan, Malcolm opened his own business and designed residential homes and commercial business spaces as thriving projects until the day he died.

Malcolm was a gifted artist and held several shows displaying his work at the Lakeview Library and other juried exhibitions in New York. His intellectual curiosity was distilled in his architecture and fine art. His abstract expressionist paintings have been purchased by private collectors and local businesses on Long Island. He was an avid reader and enjoyed discussing politics, art, current events and was a great chef in the kitchen. He relaxed by gardening and spending time with his grandchildren although his granddaughter, Lindsay Grain Carter predeceased him in 2018.

He is survived by his siblings, Walter Grain Jr., Dr. Peter Grain , David J. Grain, Gale Grain-Monk, and his late siblings Judy Grain Johnson and Clark Grain Sr. and families. In addition, he is survived by several grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

A private Memorial Service will be held. My grandfather was a great man and he did a lot of great things like helped with the twin tower in New York, had his own business, and joined the Air Force. Know my grandfather name will never be forgotten because I have the name as him and one day when I grow up I will carry on his legacy.

Our beloved cousin Malcolm was someone to be looked up to and often in his own way doled out pearls of wisdom. He had a connection with our ancestors, spirts good and bad. He spoke of them openly, but you never new if he was serious or not. We loved all the time spent with Malcolm. Wonderful memories of family gatherings, pumpkin picking, super bowl parties, Derby adventures, and personal time with him on his side deck while he enjoyed a cigar. Malcolm was full of mischief and charm. Even when he did something wrong you could not stay mad at him for long. He had 2 sides one that was all business and one of fun, which you saw when his dimples started to show. Malcolm will be remembered by all, loved by many, and forgotten by none!
Much Love & Sympathy, Larry and Karen

Dear Shawn, Kirk, Todd and the Entire Grain Family,

Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss. It is always so difficult when we lose someone whom we love so deeply. I pray that the Lord will grant you all comfort, peace and courage at this time of sorrow.

Mr. Grain was something special and I will remember him with utmost respect, love and fondness. He was brilliant, accomplished, kind, personable, and had a joyful personality that filled the room! I will always remember how he treated me and my family with such warmth and kindness when we first met him and his then wife, Mrs. Carolyn Grain, their children and other family members at the University of Virginia during dorm move in day. Shawn and I were first year college roommates and they included me in their family dinner and treated me as an immediate family member. This memory still makes me cry and powerfully remains with me as a profound example of what it means to treat others well and remain humble no matter the accomplishments and heights one may achieve in life. God´s word promises that to be absent in body is to present with the Lord. Mr. Grain your magnificent work is done here. May you now rest well and peacefully with our Lord!

All our love,

Soror Deborah McCray Ramsey, Michael Ramsey & Family

My grandfather has given me some of the best memories that I´ll cherish forever. Our long conversations we´d have when I was a child and him cracking jokes will always stay with me. He always had a story to tell me, and each story showed me he lived a fulfilling life. I´m proud to say that I´m his granddaughter, and I will love him forever. I´ll miss you so much grandad, rest easy.

As far back as I can remember, the time spent with my grandfather was filled with happiness and warmth. He always demonstrated a great amount of love towards his grandchildren and it filled me with pride to have him see me grow from a boy to a man. My grandfather left behind a truly wonderful legacy. And as we mourn his passing, let us also honor that legacy by learning from it and carrying the torch he left behind. I´ll miss you Grandpa.

Cousin Prissy, Shawn and family:

We shall not mourn a life well lived. Instead, let´s celebrate with happy tears, shared memories and have comfort in knowing he´s to be seated among the Almighty. Cousin Malcolm was an unmatched intellect and a man of purpose. I appreciate the last conversation we shared and will cherish it among fond, childhood memories of running away from his kisses. Farewell, cousin Malcolm!

Love, Sonja
