Marc Sanders

Marc David Sanders departed this life in the loving presence of friends and family after an extended illness Wednesday, August 24, 2022, just three days shy of his 68th birthday.

Marc was a brilliant musician and performer and a talented writer. He grew up in Dallas, Texas, attended two years of high school in Israel and received his bachelor's degree from the University of Texas at Austin, where he became an activist for gay rights. His professional life was extremely varied, and he was especially proud of his work as a mediator and anger management consultant. He loved to travel and lived in cities across the country including New York, San Francisco, and Honolulu, Hawaii before settling in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he fell in love with "the city different" and found a spiritual home at Congregation Beit Tikva.

Marc was predeceased by his mother, Ruthe Winegarten, his father, Tom Sanders, stepfather Alvin Winegarten, and his sisters, Martha Wilson and Debra Winegarten. He is survived by his uncle, Larry Lewin, his sister Iwalani Sanders and nephew Kimo, and sister-in-law Cindy Huyser, as well as his large chosen family including Marjorie Kershaw, Stephen Landau, Laura Cowan, and Julie von Erffa.

Marc lived with courage and gratitude. Many thanks to all those who provided loving care to Marc during his final illness. Donations in his honor may be made to organizations that promote human/civil rights, support for LGBTQ youth, animal welfare or rescue, sound environmental practices and the arts (especially youth scholarship programs).
