Marcus Norvell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 24, 2017.
Dr. Marcus "Mark" Kent Norvell, 63, of St. Simons Island, died Thursday, September 21, 2017.
Mark was struck and killed by a motor vehicle on I-95 on that evening at 5:44 PM.

Mark was born on January 18, 1954 in Tulsa, OK, to the late William Randolph Norvell and the late Elizabeth P. Sims Norvell. He graduated from Baylor University in 1976 and from Southwestern Medical School, University of Texas, in 1980. He completed his OB/GYN residency at Jacksonville Health Education Program, now called UF Jacksonville, FL, in 1984. He practiced obstetrics and gynecology in Brunswick for 31 years, retiring in 2015. Mark married the love of his life, Mary Lee Brothers on January 3, 1976.

Mark is survived by his wife of 41 years, Lee Norvell of St. Simons Island; three sons, David Marcus Norvell and wife Becky of Johnson City, TN, James Randolph Norvell and wife Joanna of Macon, GA, and Andrew "Drew" Lee Norvell of Boulder, CO; six grandchildren, William Alexander "Alex", Luke Andrew, Jack Gilbert, Tristan Xavier, Lydia Grace, and Ella Anne Muriel; one brother, Ronald Wayne Norvell and wife Barbara, of San Antonio, TX; close family friend, Matt Trevathan "the fourth son." He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who loved him.

Mark was a devoted member of First Baptist Church, St. Simons Island. Anyone who met Mark, easily saw him as a humble, gentle person of deep, sincere faith in God and generous service to his neighbor. Mark served at First Baptist Church, St. Simons Island, in various leadership roles, including past chair of deacons and was currently serving as chair of administration. He also served on several other church committees. In addition, he was the advising medical director for CareNet in Brunswick, GA. His lasting impact in this community is immense and will never be forgotten. His family will have many fond memories for years to come.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 5-7 PM on September 26, 2017 in the fellowship hall at First Baptist Church, St. Simons Island, with a Celebration of Life Service at 11 AM Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at First Baptist Church, St. Simons Island with Rev. Tony Langford officiating the service. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Mark's life. CareNet, FaithWorks, and First Baptist Church of Saint Simons Island, were close to Mark's heart. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to these organizations.

Lee and family,
I'm so sorry to hear of Mark's death. I remember meeting him at the Penn Center years ago. There are no words to express the depths of grief in loosing such a devoted companion, and during the time ahead you will be in my thoughts and prayers, holding you in the Light, as we Quakers say.

I was a patient of Dr. Norvell for several years after moving to Georgia from Maryland. I so enjoyed speaking with him and I felt very "at home" during my visits to his office. Saying many prayers for his loving family and friends. Dr. Norvell will be remembered always with that bright smile and his soft spoken mannerism and professional. Thank you for sharing so many photos of his happy life! Rest in Peace Dr. Norvell. I'm so very saddened to have heard this news today!

Wow! I have to say that I am very blessed at learning of this incredible man, and I am now even more inspired to personally press on for Christ. While I am blessed to work with Dr. Norvell's son, David Marcus Norvell, I count it a privilege to pray with my wife for the Norvell family and friends; may He hold each of you closer than ever through this - and as I am confident Dr. Norvell would have wanted: use even this to bring many others closer to Him as well. What a legacy this man has left for his family and community. I'm fortunate to know member of this great family he has left behind. I know that he leaves them all with fond memories and amazing stories of love and generosity that will last a lifetime! I know this is a tragic loss that can only be met with a knowledge that he has blessed so many with his time here. Much love to the Norvell's from TN.

Dr. Norvell was a wonderful man. He delivered my daughter and kept me calm. He also delivered daughter's son and was wonderful with her panic attack disorder. Dr. Norvell explained things so you could understand. I know he was a great family man as well. I am keeping all of you in prayers. God bless you all.
