Marcy Street Obituary
Okemos, Michigan - Born April 18, 1959. She passed away peacefully on March 22, 2019 surrounded by many loved ones. Today we remember and celebrate her joyous life.
Dr. Marcy Street was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. She attended the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools for high school. She earned a bachelor's degree in Psychology from Oberlin College in 1980 and in 1986 she graduated from University of Illinois Chicago College of Medicine. Marcy completed her residency in dermatology at Mayo Clinic in 1990 and a fellowship in micrographic surgery and dermatologic oncology at University of Wisconsin in 1991. During her fellowship she trained with Dr. Frederic Mohs, who developed the Mohs micrographic surgery technique, becoming the first African-American female fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon. Following fellowship, Marcy moved to Okemos, MI and founded Doctor's Approach Dermatology, Laser Center, and Medical Spa. Here Marcy received tremendous joy, serving her beloved community through a variety of dermatologic services. Marcy was an active member in numerous professional and social affiliations including but not limited to the American Academy of Dermatology, Michigan Dermatology Society, Skin of Color Society, Women's Dermatologic Society, and American College of Mohs Surgery.
Marcy enjoyed traveling with family, scuba diving, meditating in her backyard garden, kayaking, biking, dancing, and listening to smooth jazz and rhythm and blues. She was often remembered by her infectious smile, glowing skin, commitment to self-improvement, spiritual wellness, and passion for academic excellence and mentorship.
She is survived by her mother Marceine E. Street, daughters Chelsea St. Claire (Ben Himelhoch) and Kayla St. Claire, sister Myra Street-Nelson, and nephew Ryan Nelson. She was preceded in death by her brother-in-law Ralph L. Nelson who inspired her pursuit of medicine and dermatology.

She Is A Light

I was sharing with a friend how I am going to make an appointment to see my dermatologist back in Lansing. While doing so this obituary showed up. I had to go for a walk because I am still in disbelief.
I give the family my condolences and want you to know how much of a blessing Dr. Street was to me and the many people that had her for a physician. Many blessing to all of you and may she rest in the peace of God.

I remember Marci as a medical student at U-Illinois wildly excited about applying for a Derm residency. Her enthusiasm, smile and personality were beautiful and extraordinary. She was a delight to be around. When she had her girls she showed me pictures and said look, there are 2 new people in the world! I am deeply saddened to hear of her transition. Marcy was a wonderful person, friend and mentor - I remember when I interviewed at Mayo Clinic for Dermatology residency after spending the last month of medical school in the bahamas on a pediatrics rotation. Marcy pulled my somewhat tanned self ( ) aside between interviews and informed me I had tinea versicolor on my face and slipped me some samples. She was a beautiful person both inside and out and will be sorely missed. I loved seeing her at meetings where I could count on a big hug and a few giggles and what an infectious laugh she had. I will commit to being here as a self appointed derm-auntie for her beautiful girls as they navigate their way through dermatology training. RIP Marcy.

I am truly heart broken. Marcy and I met at a Russell Simmons event in the Hamptons and became instantly friends for over 10 years. Just a great women, business women and her favorite job being a mom.

Man that woman could light up a room when she walked in couldnt she?
She smiled in Doctor Mode. Mother Mode. Friend Mode and even Sick Mode.

Anyone lucky enough to have traveled with her knew how excited she was so visit new places. She loved her beach get always to recharge her batteries. Her favorite times at our cottage were the pontoon and jet ski rides and sitting by the fire watching the stars. It gave us such peace. Its the little things in life she enjoyed.

My heart is heavy as I grieve the loss of this truly remarkable woman. Marcy was in the group of residents one year ahead of me at Mayo Rochester. We've been colleagues and friends over the years and I watched with awe as she built the premier dermatology practice in mid Michigan.
