Marcy Wrenn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 24 to Apr. 25, 2021.
WRENN, Marcy

Margaret "Marcy" McKenzie Wrenn was born November 10, 1934, in St. Paul, MN, and died peacefully at her home in Tucson on April 17, 2021, with her husband and children by her side. She met Bob Wrenn at Macalester College in St. Paul, where they were also married at Central Presbyterian on December 29, 1956. They lived in Albany, NY while Bob completed his two-year stint in the U.S. Army and Marcy taught middle school history. In 1957, they moved to Columbus, OH where Bob pursued his PhD at Ohio State. In 1961, they moved to Tucson when he took a job teaching psychology and running the Student Counseling Center at the University of Arizona. An art-lover, Marcy studied ceramics at UA with Maurice Grossman and the two families became lifelong friends. A natural-born teacher herself, Marcy was generous in spirit and advice, and known for workshops where students learned to fire clay at "Cone 10." She also taught at Pima College and the Federal Prison, won numerous awards, exhibited at galleries across Arizona and served as president of the Southern Arizona Ceramics Association (SACA). Bob and Marcy were voracious travelers and she considered art to be her passport to experiencing the world, including Japan, whose ceramics she admired. In 2001 she taught Aboriginal children in Australia's Outback, an experience she documented in an article in Ceramics Monthly. She is survived by her husband, Bob Wrenn, and their three children, Lisa Wrenn (Peter Magnani) of Walnut Creek, CA. and granddaughters Stephanie and Danielle; Susie Wrenn (Mark DeRobertis) of Pasadena, CA and grandson Jack; and David Wrenn (Candace Manriquez) of Los Angeles and grandchildren Renee and Cesar, of Tucson. Marcy and Bob are also the great-grandparents of four. A celebration of her life will be planned for a future date. Gifts in her honor can be sent to SACA for student scholarships at Pima College and the UofA, P.O. Box 90612, Tucson, AZ 86752. Arrangements by HUDGEL'S SWAN FUNERAL HOME.

When a casserole made by Marcy and gifted to me by my husband broke recently I felt her loss all over again. That pot was my connection to her and gave me nice memories every time I used it.

I came across this obituary and wanted to express my sympathies. I was friends with Lisa at Helen Keeling School. I remember Marcy fondly as she helped my mom with our brownie troop. I would go to their house to play and Lisa would come to our house. She was always borrowing my Nancy Drew books. Great memories.

Although we have not seen Marcy and Bob for some time, we have many fond memories of get togethers, while Bob and I served as faculty at the U of A, and certainly at a number of Marcy's pottery shows where her creativity, personal warmth, and charm were in full display. Like many others, we have one of Marcy's creations that is beautiful and yet very utilitarian, and it is bowl that we use quite often.
We send our deepest sympathies to Bob and the extended Wrenn family.

Marcy was an inspiration and a local celebrity among artists and potters. In the earlier days of SACA, she hosted events, and workshops in her home. I was privileged to attend a few, and learned some skills and techniques that I have used often since. Her generosity of spirit will be remembered by all. I will think of her when handling her beautifully glazed plate that lives in my home.

Marcy was one of those friends who really came through when you needed her. When I was facing a deadline finishing a book, she tested a couple of recipes for me. Then when I moved back to Tucson before our household goods, she and Bob lent me art to hang on my walls for about a year. Such a loving, giving person. Feel so privileged to have known her.

Such a wonderfully kind, warm hearted woman. So full of life herself, she was always interested in what was going on in your life.
She was an amazing woman, and I will miss her. My sincere condolences to Bob and the family.

When I came to Tucson as a single mom in 1995, Marcy was one of the first potters to welcome me to this community. She visited my home to share mugs she liked with me. She was always friendly, warm and kind. Over the years, I saw her mainly at SACA meetings. She will be missed a lot, by a lot of people.

I was lucky to take a clay workshop at Marcy's home years ago. She was so knowledgeable about glazes, so funny with her presentations, so open about letting us view her worldly art collections, and so generous with her time! I pray for her family and hope she is doing pottery in Heaven.

What a lovely person and friend. We have thought of Marcy so often, esp when Carri fixes dinner with a "Wrennnn" bowl or covered pot, and daily when we look at her clay totems that guard our dining room. What a gal!
