Margaret Barnhart Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 4, 2025.
Margaret Ann Mulkey Barnhart of Boerne, Texas passed away on August 10, 2025, at age 85. A true Texas rose, Margaret, was born in Paducah, Texas to Mattie and William (Bill) Mulkey. "Margaret Ann," as she was known, graduated from Paducah High School then attended Baylor. There she met and married the love of her life, James (Jim) Barnhart. Soon after, Jim's job took them to Orlando, Florida where they began their family: She is survived by sons Keith Barnhart (spouse, Connie Barnhart); W. Kirk Barnhart (spouse, Randy Pace); and daughter Nesha Barnhart (spouse, Roberta Karp). Her family later included her grandchildren, Kyle Barnhart, Sam Bell (spouse, Aly Dudek) and Abel Barnhart (partner, Katie Campbell); all of whom will greatly miss "Mama Moc." Her parents and husband proceeded her in death.

While raising her family, Margaret completed her bachelor's and master's degree at the University of Central Florida (formerly FTU). Margaret was a well-respected, admired and loved history teacher at Lyman High School in Longwood, Florida. In the early 1980s Jim's career took the family back to Texas. In Houston, Margaret continued teaching but then left to undertake responsibilities associated with Jim's job; a calling in which she thrived. Upon his retirement in 1997 Margaret and Jim moved to Hunt, Texas. The Hill Country afforded them a wonderful life full of family, friends and travel. After Jim's passing in 2002, Kirk and Randy moved onto the Hunt property to assist Margaret. The entire Barnhart family is indebted to them for their selfless devotion and care they provided throughout the remainder of her life.

As a daughter, wife, mother and grandmother, Margaret was loving, supportive, encouraging and expected the best of her family. She was grateful to have Ret. Lt. Col. Dennis Cross (stepbrother) and his wife, Linda, as part of her family. If you were her friend, there was no more loyal compatriot. While Margaret maintained numerous friendships, her lifelong friends from childhood, Frances Doshier, Janis Herren and Wanda Smith (spouse, Art) were her touchstones. Her dear friends, the White's (Madeleine and Elliott, and their children, Whitney and Ganon) - all of whom met as young adults in Orlando - remained a constant presence in Margaret's life. Additionally, Bertha Lopez-Mejia worked with the Banharts for decades, becoming a close friend and constant source of support to Margaret.

Margaret was a voracious reader and would often be found reading surrounded by her beloved puppies and kitties.

As a teacher, Margaret touched hundreds of lives. To many of those students she remained a mentor and friend.

The family wishes to acknowledge the many professionals who cared for Margaret in her last few years, particularly Joann, Jackie, Dr. McCurley, and the Embrace Hospice nurses, Julie & Brook. These ladies were true angels during her last few months.

Margaret left a wonderful legacy in all that she touched and will be missed beyond measure by her family and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Esperanza - The Club 601 Esperanza Blvd., Boerne, TX 78006, in the Community Room on September 27th between 1 - 3pm. Snacks and drinks will be provided.
