Margaret Hastings Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 25, 2017.
Margaret 'Pat' Mitchell Hastings left this life on Christmas Day 2017 surrounded by family. She fought challenges to her health for over a decade with the same dedication she put into everything in her life.
Born February 26, 1937 in Delaware County, PA, Margaret received her Bachelors of Music from Wellesley College in 1958, Masters in Education from National Louis University in 1972, and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Northwestern University in 1975.
Margaret dedicated her life to the study of developmental disabilities, mental health, and aging, impacting innumerable members of her community and country with her efforts in education, social work, public policy legislation, and aging. She was well known by all with whom she worked as a thought leader who inspired others with her innovative and forward thinking solutions.
Highlights of Margaret's professional life include serving as the Director of the Center for Learning and on the Graduate Faculty at National College from 1971-1976, and as Executive Director of the Illinois Commission on Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities from 1976-1985. Following that she founded and directed the dual-degree MPH/MBA program at the University of Illinois at Chicago while a Professor of Health Resources Management from 1986-1993. In 1995 and again in 2005 she represented the Illinois area at the decennial White House Conference on aging held in Washington DC. Later she was a visiting Professor at multiple Universities and led the Policy and Management Institute, a consulting firm which focused on helping organizations improve their practices in the fields of mental health and aging.
Beyond her professional career, Margaret's biggest passion was music. She loved playing, composing, performing and listening to music. She was an expert pianist with perfect pitch and the ability to play what was in her head in any key. She delighted in volunteering regularly to assist in various community and school programs. She also was a devoted Member of the Ravinia Women's Board for over 40 years. Her other passion was discussion groups at Winnetka Congregational Church and Northwestern University.
Margaret is survived by her husband, Robert A. Hastings, who she met during her first year in college and married right after graduation nearly 60 years ago. She is also survived by two children, William H. Hastings and M. Margaret 'Margo' Georgiadis, six grandchildren, as well as her brothers-in-law Adrian C. Melissinos and John H. Hastings, sister-in-law Mary Sue Bohle, and seven nieces and nephews.

Margaret and I were both musicians, so we had a lot of contact with each other.
I admired her greatly - her talent, her lovely attitude, and loved her friendship. Margaret made a difference in the world.

Pat and I were very close at Wellesley, as we were both musicians. We made music together, we spent time together. Pat and Bob visited us in our Wellesley home the year before she died. We had a wonderful visit. She was very brave. I send love to all who knew and loved her. Leslie Meyer Holmes

Our sincere condolences! We have known ever since we met you, Bob, how much Pat meant to you. I'm sure her passion for music influenced you profoundly and we are grateful for your help when we started Midwest Young Artists Conservatory 25 years ago.

May the God of all comfort be with the family during this difficult time.

I knew Pat very well when we were both students at Wellesley College. I last saw her, and her husband Bob, when they came to visit Wellesley and us a couple of years ago. She was a vibrant, intelligent, musical, outgoing person, who accomplished a great deal in college and in later years. She was a member of a female octet at Wellesley called The Widows. I was the leader of another female octet called The Tupelos. We had a friendly rivalry. I send my deepest sympathy to her wonderful, caring husband Bob.

Margaret's command of issues and her creativity in making some pretty dry items exciting and motivating were only a few of her qualities. She served on AgeOptions Advisory Council for over a decade and was a true friend always.

Dear Bob, Bill and Margo,
Not many of us have accomplished nearly what Pat has in her lifetime. It seems as though she was always doing something extraordinary. We have known her since our children were in grade school. That is a long time to observe.
Please know that we are thinking of you as you face the weeks and months ahead. Pat was a real fighter with her illnesses....an example for all of us..
We send our love. respect and sympathy.

Please accept my condolences. Please know that the God of comfort feels your pain and sorrow. He actually provides something better to look forward to. Jeremiah 29:11 specifically tells us God wants to give us a peaceful "future and hope." He promises in the near future all the pain and sorrow you are experiencing about your loss will be gone and we will be able to enjoy perfect life with all our loved ones.
