HOUGHTON, Margaret E. It is with great sadness that the family of Margaret announce her passing on Monday, October 8, 2018. Margaret is survived by her friend of many years John Beckett. She is also survived by her sister Carol (George Sorbara) and her brother Bob (Yvonne). She was a dear Aunt to Beth (the late Matthew Brennan), Chrissie, Dan (Natalija), Mike (Pam) and Clifford. Margaret was also a GREAT-Aunt to Angelina, Emily, Teresina, Benjamin, Gabriella and Matthew. She was predeceased by her parents Charles and Jeanette Houghton. Margaret worked for the Hamilton Public Library for 38 years as the Archivist. Her love for local history was known by everyone she met. She wrote and edited many books on Hamilton History and was the Past-President of the Head-of-the-Lake historical society, and as such was instrumental in the installation of the new Gore Park Fountain. She was also Past-President of the Hamilton Players Guild (North America's oldest continuing amateur theatre). Margaret received the Hamilton Gallery of Distinction Award in 2014, she also received the McMaster Distinguished Alumni Award in 2015. A Celebration of Life will be held at The Waterfront Banquet and Conference Centre 555 Bay St. N. Hamilton (above the Hamilton Yacht Club) on Sunday, October 21, 2018 from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Margaret asked that donations be made in her memory to the Hamilton Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 245 Dartnall Rd., Hamilton, L8W 3V9 or the The Street Cat Program, a project that partners with the HSPCA to run a spay/neuter trap-and-release program for the local feral cats , C/O The Cat Clinic, 391 Concession St., Hamilton, L9A 1B6.
