Margaret Keenleyside Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 1 to Nov. 2, 2022.
Anne passed away peacefully at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre in Peterborough on October 27, 2022 at the age of 60 after a struggle with breast cancer. Dearly beloved daughter of the late Judy and Hub Keenleyside. Predeceased by her brother Dave, her birth father Arthur 'Buzz' Lee (Lynda), and her birth mother Judy Dobie. She leaves behind her devoted and loving partner Pat Butler, her beautiful stepdaughters Melissa (Trevor) and Cassandra (Noah), her extended Keenleyside, Ivay, Dobie and Lee families, her colleagues at Trent University and her many friends, especially Christy, Olga, Lynda, Tina, Penny, Richard, Jacqueline, Brenda and Sue. Anne was born in London, Ontario but grew up in Toronto. With a dream since grade 10 of becoming an anthropologist, she earned her B.A. and Ph.D. at McMaster University, her M.A. at the University of Alberta, and her B.Ed. at Ontario Institute for Studies in Education in Toronto before being hired as a permanent faculty member in the Anthropology Department at Trent University. Trained as a biological anthropologist, Anne travelled the world conducting fieldwork in Nunavut, Bulgaria, Tunisia, and Siberia, among other places. Her happiest memories include childhood summers at the family cottage in Muskoka, her many travels abroad, and her research adventures in the field. A celebration of life service will be held at Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre, 375 Mount Pleasant Road (east gate entrance), Toronto, on Saturday, November 5th at 11:00. Interment and reception to follow. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00, immediately prior to the service. For friends, co-workers, and family in Peterborough, a reception will be held in town at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice Peterborough, the Terry Fox Foundation, or a Charity of Your Choice would be greatly appreciated.

I was very fortunate to have Anne as my first anthropology prof at University of Toronto. Her incredible intelligence, kindness, and passion inspired me to pursue a degree in biological anthropology. She was loved by all her students.
My sincere condolences to Anne's family, friends, and everyone whose lives have been changed by her presence.

I´m so sad to hear that Anne has left her beautiful life on earth. She was such a lovely woman who cared deeply for others. Anne would often come by with her soft voice and say hello to my little friend Pockets at the monkey sanctuary and she would laugh and enjoy his antics. What a remarkable and fulfilling life Anne had with people who loved her and had a fascinating career. Anne will always be part of the sanctuary and she will be always missed.
Fondly, Charmaine

I am incredibly saddened to hear of the passing of Anne. She was such a sweet, gentle, caring and beautiful soul. Anne and Pat spent many days volunteering at Story Book Farm Primate Sanctuary and helped the sanctuary in very many different ways. When working outside she never complained if it was too hot or too cold - the work had to get done. She was looking forward to coming to help again this fall. All of us at the Sanctuary send our deepest condolences to Pat and her extended family. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her bravery, her warmth and her compassion.

I will always cherish my girls' weekends with Anne and Lynda in Peterborough and Ottawa and our phone calls when Anne would provide me with the latest news about everyone we knew -- but never revealed her sources. She was the classiest person I've ever known! Rest in Peace Anne. xoxo

I was so sorry to hear of Anne's passing. Ever since meeting her years ago at McMaster Univ, I have looked up to Anne as an anthropologist but also as such a genuinely kind and lovely person. She was a real gem of a person. My sincere condolences to her family, friends and colleagues.

I was devastated to hear the heartbreaking news that Anne had passed away. I was really hoping for a miracle and that she would beat the cancer. When I think of beautiful Anne, I can see her gorgeous smile, her sparkling blues eyes and her zest for life. Anne would light up as we would talk about her love for her cats and all precious animals. She also spoke so highly of Pat and his girls. She had such a pure heart. We worked together on the 1845 lost Franklin Expedition (with Dr. Douglas Stenton and Dr. Robert Park) as I am the forensic artist and she was the incredible anthropologist who studies these unidentified remains. I loved her enthusiasm which shined so bright when she would let me know they found another skull that might need a facial reconstruction. One of my best memories is when we unexpectedly bumped into each other at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Quebec, in the Franklin Expedition room. We were so happy to see each other! Our last time together wasn´t that long ago, we were having lunch on a patio by the water and talking about life. I will treasure the memories of us meeting for lunch and trying all different kinds of foods through the years. I feel the world is emptier now without her. I will forever miss you Anne. You will always be very special. Love you, Diana

My deepest condolences to Anne´s family and dearest friends. I knew Anne mainly from high school and was so fortunate to catch up with her this last decade. Anne was always brilliant, sweet, kind and a joy to be with. I have so many wonderful memories of sharing time with her during our teenage years- sharing sewing projects, admiring her tea pot collection, watching crazy Australian films and of course tea time with the Latin class.

It is with the greatest sadness that I learned of Anne´s passing.

I cannot help but recall vividly the first time I met Anne. It was 30 years ago when I just started my Ph.D. study at McMaster as a brand-new international student. One day in September, I walked into a lab and Anne was there. I did not know who she was, but Anne knew who I was. She welcomed me to Canada and talked to me a lot about her research. In just mere minutes, it felt like we were old friends. She was incredibly welcoming, warm, and encouraging. I was and still am thankful for the great kindness Anne showed me during that chat, as it meant a lot to me.

I have known Anne for over 30 years. I feel so sad that she passed away at such a young age. I will miss her forever. She was a caring and kind individual with a great sense of humor. Everyone loved Anne, and she was a humble and very fine scholar, the kind of scholar whom I respect the most.

I feel very honored to have been Anne´s friend.

RIP, Anne.

Anne was a beloved professor to me and many of my classmates at Trent. As we spread this sad news I keep hearing this repeated again and again. "I want to be like Anne when I grow up" was a phrase I heard (and spoke) a number of times after lectures or seminars or unexpected chats in the anthro department lounge. Anne wrote reference letters for me for grad school and field schools and I´m grateful to have caught up with her briefly this summer. It was an absolute pleasure to learn from her, both academically and simply as a fellow human. My deepest condolences to Anne´s family and friends. She was loved and will be missed by many.

Anne and I met many years ago as graduate students at the University of Alberta. I was fortunate to be able to reconnect with her several years ago when she kindly agreed to collaborate on new bioarchaeological investigations of the 1845 Franklin expedition. It was such a pleasure to be able to not only reconnect with Anne, but to work with and learn from such an outstanding and generous scholar and friend. My sincere condolences to Pat and to the Keenleyside family.

I have been dreading this day for several years. Anne has been a very precious person in my life, though I did not see her nearly enough. Whether it was her delicious baking or her warm supportive conversation, she brought a sweetness into the world that I will forever miss. Trent has not been the same since she left, but I was comforted to know that she was just a few blocks away for walks and porch visits. She was (and is) a wonderful spirit, and so beloved by so many people. My thoughts go out to Pat and her family.

I knew Anne when she was a student in my classes at McMaster, and later as a friend. She was right from the start a brilliant, outstanding and dedicated student - and she went on to be an outstanding anthropologist. She was also a witty, cheerful, gentle and genuinely decent person. Her passing came as a shock to me, and is so sad - she is going to be missed by a lot of people.

Anne was a treasure to all she met and worked with. The news of her untimely passing was devastating to me. I had visited her this past August and she looked radiant, as always. Her smile would light up a room and melt the heart of friends and family. I will miss her very much, but I am grateful that she passed peacefully, and will forever rest with those friends and family that have passed before. Till we meet again, rest In peace my dear cousin.

I was saddened to learn of Anne's passing. I was present in the home of Hub & Judy Keenleyside when Judy came home in 1962 with Margaret Anne their new daughter. Judy gently placed Anne in my arms to hold. What a precious package.
