Margaret (Maxine) Shalhoub was preceded in death by her husband Mike and son Michael. She is survived by her children, Virginia (DeeDee), Cathy, Sam & Joyce, six grandchildren & four great grandchildren & her brother Raymond.
Maxine was born to immigrants from Syria & Lebanon: Bolos and Julia (Kashouhe) Joseph. As the twelfth child in a family of 13, Maxine grew up with multiple "mothers", nephews who were almost her age and a wide array of accomplished & talented siblings. Her early family experiences created a deep appreciation and support of extended family life. She went on to coordinate the Joseph family holiday gatherings; a tradition that continues today.
After attending St. Benedicts Elementary School and Sacred Heart of Mary High School, Maxine briefly followed her sister Virginia into the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary novitiate. For her entire adult life, she had a deep devotion to the Blessed Mother.
In July of 1948, she married Mike Shalhoub Jr. (Big Mike), who was also the son of immigrants from Syria & Lebanon. During the years of raising a family & beyond, Maxine, fondly known as "The General," exercised her organizational skills for the benefit of numerous religious and charitable causes As the President of the Mother's Club at St. Alphonsus Elementary School Maxine came to know a wide variety of parishioners. She went on to spearhead many parish fundraisers. She was a member of the Los Angeles Grand Jury, that indicted Sirhan Sirhan for the assassination of Bobby Kennedy. Maxine was fully engaged in the efforts to move Our Lady of Mt Lebanon Catholic Church to a larger property in Beverly Hills. From there she became active in the Maronite League and chaired the committee to host its national convention in Los Angeles. She served on committees to raise funds & support Danny Thomas with
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in its early years. Later in life, Maxine continued to support her church and the community at the Religious of Sacred Heart of Mary in Montebello. She was honored by Our Lady of Mt Lebanon -St Peter's Cathedral & Mayor Villaraigosa of the City of Los Angeles for her "many years of commitment & dedication to improving the quality of life for others". Her life was characterized by service to the community and to Our Lady - with a frequent sprinkling of Poker in later years for entertainment. Even with all those activities over the years she became a fabulous cook and shared her talents in that area with others through her personal catering company, her sales position at Swiss Park Banquet Center & her personal hospitality.
She will be missed by many, but surely there is joyful partying in Heaven with her beloved "Big Mike," her son Michael & all her sisters and brothers, parents and so many family & friends in Our Father's House.
