Margaret Tebo Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 23, 2025.
TEBO, MARGARET SCHARR ("Peggy") --- of the Carillon senior community in Plainfield, Illinois. Peggy was born in St. Louis, Missouri on August 29, 1940 to Elton B and Margaret L. Scharr. She came to Chicago in 1963 when she married. She was a fifth grade teacher in Evergreen Park School District 124 for nearly 20 years until her retirement in 2000, when she returned to St. Louis to care for her mother. She remained in St. Louis until her mother's death in 2014 at age 101. She then returned to the Chicago area to be near her three doting adult children, Margaret G ("Meg") Tebo (Elise Pullen) of Bolingbrook, Elizabeth A. ("Beth") Tebo-Michalski (Michael) of New Lenox, and John E. Tebo of Plainfield. She is also survived by her brother, Jack B. Scharr of St. Louis, and her beloved nephew, Christopher B. Scharr (Megan) and his two sons, Teague and Avett. She also leaves many nieces and other extended family, and dozens of friends. She was a proud PEO sister, both in St. Louis and in the Chicago area.

Those who knew Peggy remember her kindness, her genuine interest in other people, her enormous generosity, her love of travel and shopping and her easy laugh. She never met a stranger. Often, her children would look for her at an event, only to find her talking to someone they'd never seen before. People would hand her their babies in airports and shopping malls and ask her to keep an eye on the child while the parent went to the restroom. She had the sort of face that made people instinctively know that she could be trusted. Her students loved her, her colleagues looked to her for wisdom and her friends cherished her. Her children simply adored her because they knew how much she loved them.

Peggy died at her home on November 30, 2020 from Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, an insidious lung disease for which there is no known cause, no cure and little treatment. There will be no services at this time due to Covid. The family hopes to have memorials in St. Louis and Chicago in the spring or summer next year. Cremation services are being handled by the Neptune Society of Illinois. Memorials to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation or to charities promoting public education and child welfare, her twin passions, are appreciated.
