Margaret Vandegrift Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 27, 2008.
Margaret J. "Mag" Vandegrift, 72, a loving wife, mother, aunt, grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, April 26, 2008, at Troy Community Hospital following an illness with her family by her side.

Born on Sept. 20, 1935, in Troy, Pa., Mag was the daughter of Francis and Lula Coakley Wilcox. She was married to James R. Vandegrift on June 15, 1957, and he predeceased her in 1973. Left with the task of raising a large family, Mag embraced her job as a mother and took very seriously the importance of education. Active in her community, she enjoyed the many friendships she nurtured.

She was a communicant of St. John's Catholic Church in Troy and also enjoyed reading.

Surviving are her loving family members, who cherish her memory: children, Mary Vandegrift of Tennessee, Ronald (Sandy) Vandegrift of Millerton, Pa., Paul (Leanne) Vandegrift of Horseheads, N.Y., Rose Kintz of Colorado, Wayne Vandegrift of Gillett, Pa., and Mark Vandegrift of Wellsburg; 19 grandchildren, William, Michael, Hope, "Ginny," Sherry, Amy, Ernie, Merle, Tiffany, Josh, Justin, Chadd, Alec, Tom, Megan, Jessica, Tyler, Annie and Brady; sisters, her twin, Marge (James) Renzo of East Troy, Pa., Joyce (James) Maloney of Columbia Cross Roads, Pa., and Tressa Wells of Athens, Pa.; brother, John (Sheila) Wilcox of Troy; 19 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and many family friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mag was predeceased by her beloved granddaughters, Angela and Michelle Draht and her sister, Betty Stranger.

Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 28, at Caywood's Funeral Home & Gardens, 1126 Broadway, Southport, N.Y. Funeral services for Mag will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Caywood's. Graveside services will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Elmira, N.Y.

Mary ,Rose, Ron, Paul, Mark ,Wayne ~wow..what can I say..other than shocked to have read of your mom's passing. She always had energy, spirit for everyone it seemed, yet overlooking herself. She always made me feel as if I was a part of the family, just as all of you have . I'll never forget her taking Dopey, who promptly became her "watch dog" going over the "men in the family", basicly thinking he was the "baby" of the family wanting all of your mom's attention, which she gave hi, even after he went after the neighbor's chickens!! I'm so glad I met, got to know all of you thru Mary . I'll try to make it by to see all of you, see your mom off on her journey . Prayers & Blessings to all of you , your families and friends .

To all Of Maggies children,

Remember all the good times that we had while we were growing up, and boy were some of those parties great.

It has been a pleasure knowing Maggie while I was growing up. I had always treated her like a second mom. Maggie was always a joy to be around. She could always bring a smile to my face when I was down. She is upstairs waiting for us. You know that she will always be watching out for us. Maggie we will miss you. You will always and forever be in our hearts.

Kids, it has been a long time since we have seen each other. I would love to come up but it is impossible with my health. Grandma is in a health care center and is not able to come either. We send you all our love and prayers.

To the family of Maragret and all other relatives.
We want to send our prayers to each and everyone of you. Also our thoughts are with you at this time.
What a wonderful person Maragret was. We worked together for many years at Paper Magic here in Troy and she was never one to complain. She always talked about her children and grandchildren which was always first in her heart. We have been friends for many years and enjoyed doing different things together such as picinics, going out to eat and most recently being able to be together at the Gillett Senior Center. We know you have many wonderful memories of her and what more could you ask. She is now safe in the Lords' hands.
Mays God's blessing be with each and every one of you.
