Margaret Whitlam, one of Australia's most revered public figures, has died aged 92. The wife of former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, she was the first to insist the partner of the prime minister could have a public life of her own. Margaret Whitlam, an extraordinary woman with a wonderful sense of humour. RIP

March 21, 2012

I remember sitting in a restaurant where Margaret was lunching with a group of ladies - her stature and welcome to the ladies at the lunch made an enormous impression on me as a young girl - her legacy is that she was not afraid as a woman to think out loud and speak her mind and she did so with respect and gusto that made her truly unique. Dear Margaret - your light will burn forever in the hearts and minds of women in Australia and throughout the world - Christine, Sydney NSW

Margaret was, more than perhaps anyone else, the reason my husband Patrick Veitch and I moved to Australia. On his first visit he fell madly in love with her and remained so throughout his time at The Australian Opera and the rest of his life. When I came back with our daughters Alexandra and Francesca, Margaret was the first to offer a hug, lunch and a good drink. She and Gough were great friends to us always. God be good to you Margaret. Safe home.

The passing of Margaret Whitlam is of course a matter of profound sadness for the Whitlam family, especially for her devoted husband Gough. Whatever one thought of the Whitlam government, the loving fidelity of Gough and Margarets' near seventy year marriage stands as a beacon to this generation of the beauty of a faithful married life. May her loved ones be comforted during their time of loss.

Switched on, massively curious about everyone and everything, witty and a rare ability to pay the greatest compliment of real attention to whoever she was with. My lunches and other contact with her was a highlight. What a woman. Gough, Stephen, Catherine, Anthony and Nick, their partners and children - thank you for sharing her with the rest of us.

Margaret travelled extensively with her husband, and engaged 'ordinary' people with the same intelligence, compassion and genuine interest she extended to 'influential' people. I saw first hand her positive effect on young uni students. We will all suffer loss because she is no longer in this world. Prayers and condolences to the family. Gough, neither of you will ever be forgotten. You both did so much for good, especially for the students who were not 'upper class'.

A Reminiscence

YES, thou art gone! and never more
Thy sunny smile shall gladden me;
But I may pass the old church door,
And pace the floor that covers thee.

May stand upon the cold, damp stone,
And think that, frozen, lies below
The lightest heart that I have known,
The kindest I shall ever know.

Yet, though I cannot see thee more,
'Tis still a comfort to have seen;
And though thy transient life is o'er,
'Tis sweet to think that thou hast been;

To think a soul so near divine,
Within a form so angel fair,
United to a heart like thine,
Has gladdened once our humble sphere.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

As a twelve year old, I can remember seeing Gough and Margaret at our school fete in the mid-1960's. I will never forget the wonderful impression they made with so many ordinary people through that afternoon. Physically striking, both moved easily through the crowd and were warm and friendly to the many children who waited to talk with them or get autographs. When Gough became PM, Margaret became the doyen of first ladies, setting a wonderful example for women and girls of all ages in what they could do and achieve. Rest in peace Margaret - a life very well lived..

I have always adored Margaret Whitlam for her individual convictions and dedication to humanity, plus her sense of humour. I saw her driving through the centre of Sydney one day in 1986 and cheekily yelled out my car window "G'day Margaret!" as we passed each other. Although we did not know each other personally she grinned and waved at me. That said a lot to me about her approachable personality and her connection with the community. Vale Margaret !
