Marialana Knorpp Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 4, 2023.
On Sunday August 13, 2023, Marialana Strothers Knorpp succumbed to heart failure @ UCSF Medical Center after a lifetime battle with Hodgkins disease. All throughout her life she fought the good fight with the affliction of Hodgkins, starting at the age of 16, with a remission at 23 yrs. old and then bouts of breast cancer as an adult. Having grown-up primarily in West Orange, New Jersey, she moved west after an initial series of cancer treatments at Sloan-Kettering Hospital in New York, the University of Texas Medical Center and finally to Stanford Medical Center in Palo Alto, CA, while finishing high school at St. Francis High in Mountain View, CA. In early 1989, she met her future husband, John and got married shortly thereafter (1990), moving to Walnut Creek, CA.

It was there she continuously supported the Wellness Community Center by donating numerous hours consulting with young cancer survivors by sharing her inspirational life story. She also raised cancer awareness through fundraising walks and even did a twenty plus miles cross country skiing event in Alaska. She proved over and over again her loving, courageous fight to help support her fellow cancer patients.

When she started something she was passionate about, she was all in. That holds true especially in regard for her love of teaching the subject of English & literature to high school students @ College Park High, Pleasant Hill, CA. She served 18 years of teaching in the Mt. Diablo School district (16 years @ College Park).

At College Park, she became Department Chair for a few years while earning her Masters degree @ St. Mary's University in Moraga, Ca. Her love for poetry, literature, the origins of the language and all things to do with England, made for a thought provoking and challenging classroom. In many ways, she was a teenager at heart, often questioning the authorities and the "powers at be", which sometimes landed her in hot water with the traffic cops! She encouraged in her students to take on social injustices and norms and not to take them at face value. After approx. 20 years in her profession of teaching, she retired by the ocean she loved so much in Bodega Bay, CA.

We will sorely miss her beautiful big smile, warm welcoming hugs, infectious laughter, love of life, grace and simple elegance. Marialana was deeply loved by her husband, John W Knorpp, her extended family and as a special friend to so many.

She was also a great and caring Cocker Spaniel Mom, who raised 5 pups over the years.

In lieu of flowers, please consider sending donations "In Loving Memory of Marialana Strothers Knorpp" to the Boys & Girls Club of America and KQED.

A memorial service will be announce when arrangements are finalized.

Oh Marialana! I was just thinking of you when I heard `Brown Eyed Girl´ by Van Morrison. My grandfather called you this, he thought you were the most beautiful girl in the world. And you were! Your friendship inspired me. I hope we meet again in another life.

I´m just one of so many that miss Marialana. I think of her daily. A memory that made me smile today was fun.
I always take my dear friends to Tadich Grill for a meal. Marialana and I went a few times. They are the oldest restaurant in California known for stiff drinks and great food. One lunch there martinis started the meal. We were one drink down when our waiter came to take our order. Feeling no pain from the drink we both started chatting Stephen up. Well every time he would come by he would chat and flirt with Marialana. This was so much fun to watch and participate in. Four hours and many martinis later we had laughed, talked and flirted with Stephen we had to go. Out we walked and we both said at the same time we would always sit at a table where Stephen was.
I took both Marialana and John there last year on her birthday and we were both disappointed that Stephen had retired but we also shared a smile at the memory of that wonderful lunch together.
I will always miss her bright smile, laugh and her love.

I often remember Mrs. Knorpp rushing down before graduation to capture this picture with tears of joy in her eyes. I was always so inspired by teachers that I joined the profession myself. Her love for students and challenging rigor is evident in my own teaching today. Her legacy lives on.

Mrs Knorpp was such a positive adult figure in my teenage years. I took several of her classes during high school. She always listened to my teen angst without judgement, shared stories of her life when she was younger that provided some good life lessons, and always provided encouragement. She made me feel like I could do great things in my life. I will really miss her eccentric and vibrant personality.

Our Bodega Bay "Friendsgiving" will never be quite the same without our beloved Marialana! We all have so many fun and poignant memories of our dinners together at the Fiano beach house. We celebrated birthdays, holidays and even fur baby birthdays! How could we ever not laugh when Marialana laughed?! It was truly infectious. There were a lot of things we didn´t know about our friend, I think because she always seemed to just live in the moment. She will be sorely missed by so many friends that she´s gathered on her life path. She left us all, especially her soul-mate John, way too soon. Marialana, I will miss having you as a good friend, but you´ll reside in our hearts forever

We met in Whitney Hall at Chico, I knew when I first met her, and I do mean first, that we would be lifelong friends.
There are too many to single out because we laughed a lot when we were together. There was a very intimate moment with her and John at the dining table in Walnut Creek, we had drinks, many, that when I think of it I can´t help but laugh with joy at being there in that moment.
Other than her smile is the joy she gave and got when together with the people she loved. Her hugs and kisses were very special.
We recently spent time together in Carmel a place that we both hold dear in our hearts. We ate well, walked slowly through town and I got to introduce her to a jewelry store that she fell in love with. It´s my favorite store in Carmel.
What I will remember is her style she always looked fabulous. I firmly believe she was the daughter my mother would have loved to have as her own.
Talking, laughing and sharing.
When I will go to Tadich Grill I will forever remember our lunches together there.
There are two. First, is my wedding day. After the ceremony we greeted people and Marialana was one of the last. She was sobbing she wouldn´t let go of hugging and kissing me. She didn´t want me to move away which I was going to be doing since I married an Army officer. With her red lipstick on I had red all over my cheek, neck and dress. Every time I would look at the dress I could perfectly see her. The second was once a month for years she gave me sanctuary while trying to work through my divorce. They were very special supportive weekends with her that I still don´t think I repaid her for.
I learned so much from her but I think it would be that solitude is very important for one´s sanity and to love your family and friends in every way you can.

Our small community will miss Marialana, as we would see her so often out on our walks. Always greeted with a big smile and a kind word, she would brighten your day. So sorry her time here was shortened so unexpectedly.

Marialana was a treasured member of one of our book clubs, known as the Lit Group. Her insights were invaluable, especially when it came to Shakespeare! But mostly I loved her beautiful smile and generosity of spirit. I will miss her greatly.

Marialana was such a bright, funny, caring, treasured friend. We shared so many loves, especially for our husbands and cocker spaniel fur babies. We enjoyed getting together for dinner parties, birthdays, holidays or just to hang out with a glass of champagne. I miss her dearly.
