Marie Summey McSwain Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 27, 2016.
"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith" This scripture from II Timothy speaks volumes of Marie R. Summey McSwain, 87, who passed away on Friday, May 20, 2016 at the Azalea Gardens Assisted Living Center in Hollywood, Florida. Marie was a longtime member of Long Creek Baptist Church in Dallas, North Carolina where she was heavily involved in many church activities and held several roles within the church along with being a member of the WMU. She made it her mission to often hand write notes and cards and mail them to her family, church family and friends. Marie had many friends in her work place and in her church. She was a very personable lady who worked with the public as a clerk in the delicatessen and was a cake decorator at Harris Teeter. And she loved to travel. A loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Marie was very proud of her family.

Marie was the daughter of the late Melvin Ruff and Lucille Peeler Ruff. She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Leroy Summey, the father of her children who passed away in 1984 and Alvin McSwain who was a loyal companion and mate to her; two children: Rhonda Kiser and Michael Summey; one grandson: Edward R. Straughan; one sister: Amelia Wells and two brothers: Richard Ruff and Danny Ruff.

Those left behind to cherish Marie's memories and to follow in her footsteps are her daughter: Beth Baucom of Hollywood, Florida; her son: Kevin Summey and wife Sarah of Gastonia, North Carolina; seven grandchildren and several great grandchildren: one sister: Betty Bernasconi of Gastonia, North Carolina; two brothers and sisters in law: Charles and Elsie Ruff of Gastonia, North Carolina and James and Wilma Ruff of Dallas, North Carolina.

A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held 2:00 PM on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at Long Creek Baptist Church, 210 Long Creek Baptist Church Road, Dallas, North Carolina 28034 with Reverend Wayne Key to deliver words of comfort to the family and friends. Active pallbearers are Matthew Summey, Jeremiah Summey, Donnie Wells, Jerome Wells, Larry Norman and Justin Norman.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM prior to the service.

Graveside and committal service will follow in the Long Creek Baptist Church cemetery.

Marie came into our lives 20 years ago. Her pastor jokingly said Marie went to the Farmers Market and said I want those beans, corn and that farmer, who was my Dad, Alvin McSwain. We were a big family but Marie accepted us all and let us know from the beginning she was not trying to take our Mother's place. We thanked her for that. Dad and Marie loved each other and were good for each other. Marie liked to travel and we were able to take her and Dad to Boone and Pigeon Forge. Marie enjoyed playing Scrabble with her sisters, attending her TOPS group, baking and sending cards. At our family gatherings we would each fix something and Marie usually did desserts. After one occasion Marie said I'm not fixing dessert anymore because we didn't even take a bite out of the snickers bar cake she made. We were are baffled because no one remembered seeing the dessert and with our crowd there was no way it wasn't eaten. We came to the conclusion it was never taken out of the refrigerator. Marie made wonderful cakes and we enjoyed them.Marie sent lovely cards to family, friends, and at Mt. Zion to college students and those serving our country. Marie joined Dad's church, Mt. Zion and was active in all the activities, choir, Bethany SS Class, and Keenagers. After Dad died 6-1-2009, Marie had some health problems and had to move to Florida with Beth. Marie always said, "God plants us where we are for a season". She lived by that and accepted wherever she was as God's plan for her. Marie said she didn't want flowers, she wanted cards. We tried to keep in touch with Marie by phone, cards and a few were able to visit her in Florida. This is our final card to Marie. We love you and thank you for being a part of our family. "Miss." Marie was a joy to be around. She was friendly, loving, full of laughter and never judgmental. Its refreshing to know that she is safe in Our Father's hands surrounded by love ones and friends. May our memories of "Miss." Marie live in each of us until we all meet again on that glorious day. Praying for her children, sisters and family members as they mourn her loss.May your memories and God's grace provide you the strength to get through this season. Sincerely, Christy G. Straughan-Haley ( Jake Straughan's Mom)

Marie was a sweet, kind, and loving woman, with a delightful sense of humor. She also made the best pound cake ever! I was lucky to be able to spend so much time with her, once she moved to Hollywood. My condolences to Beth and the rest of Marie's family. RIP, Marie.
