Marilyn Gay Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 25, 2025.
Marilyn Elizabeth Gay (née Hoffman) died peacefully in Ocean City, Maryland on July 4, 2025, of natural causes. Born September 11, 1932, Marilyn grew up in Baltimore as the middle of three children in a family rooted in service and community. Her parents were Carl Louis Hoffman and Lena Eleanora Hoffman; her father ran a popular florist shop. Her siblings, Charlotte Meyers (affectionately known as "Chots") and Carl Hoffman, predeceased her. Marilyn worked for the Bell telephone company before marrying Frank Gay. The couple shared many decades together until Frank's passing in 2010.

Marilyn was a devoted mother and grandmother whose home was always open. She is survived by her daughter, Karen Bangs (née Gay), and her grandson, Joseph Letke. She was also cherished by Joseph's wife, Ivonne Letke, who thought of Marilyn as her own grandmother. Marilyn was preceded in death by her stepson, Frank Gay Jr., and by her grandson, Shane Gay.

A lover of gatherings and small pleasures, Marilyn filled her days with church activities, mahjong and Scrabble games, and the crafts she made by hand, including crocheted blankets, ceramics, and other intricate projects. For many years she volunteered at the Peach Festival at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, a service she treasured. Her potato salad was the taste of summer at every reunion, and her Ocean City home was the place everyone came to laugh, linger, and be together. Marilyn will be remembered for her steadfast faith, upstanding values, and unfailing care for those she loved.

What a wonderful Lady with so much Faith and love. Marilyn is truly one of the nicest people I have ever met. I´m am blessed to have been able to cut her hair and sit and chat with her about her love for God and Jesus with such a sharp mind until the end she is a Blessed and favored lady. How blessed we are to have known Marilyn as our beach neighbor for many, many years. Before she passed, I was lucky enough to share memories with her - our sons climbing on our roof, my mother-in-law taking her bulldog & monkey to the beach, with the monkey riding the bulldog, the paper boy riding through the park selling newspapers. So glad we were able to share smiles.
Marilyn was a kind and loving neighbor, who touched many lives over the years. Her warm smile and gentle ways will be missed by many.

Sending heartfelt condolences to my cousin Karen and her son Joseph. I was fortunate to have a chance to visit my Aunt/Godmother in June with my sister and brother in-law. I'm so glad that I got to visit with her before her passing. I have many happy memories of holidays at her and Uncle Frank's house in Westview and many trips to visit them in Ocean City. May she rest in peace.

Marilyn was a special lady. I had only been friends with her for a few years, however I felt like she had been in my life for years. She was always happy and had an infectious smile. When it got close for her to meet her maker I would go down and by her bedside we would pray together. Sometimes she would join in, a little, but it seemed to bring her some comfort. I am so grateful for her presence in my life. Donna Blische.

Marilyn was a very special beach neighbor to us since 2009 and we have many fond memories of her in Ocean City. The first picture is Marilyn holding our little dog in 2010 and the second picture is Marilyn and I watching a beautiful sunset together! We enjoyed going to the Peach Festival at St. Luke´s Lutheran Church, watching the sunsets, sharing our faith and just spending time together. She was more than a neighbor... we had a very special friendship, and I truly cherish the memories... God has a very special angel in Heaven Love you and miss you Marilyn . Libby and Mark Felix

The best Thanksgiving of my life was spent last year with Mom Mom. Seeing how happy she was to spend time together doing everyday things like going out for a hot chocolate, looking at old photos, and eating a nice meal at home as a family reminded me to always appreciate good things in my life, no matter how small they may seem. I´m grateful for the memories we made together over the years and will always cherish how delightfully she blended a feisty spirit with a deeply caring one.

I´ll love you forever, Mom Mom! Thank you for being my grandma too

Aunt Marilyn was an important part of my life. She was always supportive of me and showed it with her presence at my special occasions. I have great memories of Christmases at her and Uncle Frank´s house, and of times spent with her and Karen in Ocean City. She mourned the loss of her sister Charlotte and her brother Carl (my father) within two months of each other in 2023. We thank God for his assurance that they are now reunited.

This is a picture of my Mom, her parents, and me (her daughter,) at Ocean City, Maryland when my Dad built their first place here. Such good memories of my Mom and Dad, and my grandparents. I love you Mom and Dad and know you are finally together. Love you!

Her at 59 years old (I think) holding me and my cousin Shane, her other grandson, while we spent our summers on the OC boardwalk, swimming, and eating crabs. These were some of the best times!

I encourage others to include their photos with Marilyn as well.

We will always remember you.
