Marilyn Rogers Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 17, 2024.
Marilyn Rogers was born Marilyn Boczulak on December 4, 1952, in Cleveland, Ohio, to parents Stephen and Lillian Boczulak. She passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 11, 2023 at her home in Austin, Texas. She is survived by her husband of 50 years Steven Rogers and her brother Stephen Boczulak, first cousins Linda Roberts, Greg Zipp, Joanne McMahan, Connie Weber, Ronnie Kestranek, Peter Mackowski and Nikki Jansen, nephew Mark Boczulak, great nephews Ben Boczulak and Andrew Smith, great nieces Emma Boczulak, Hannah Curtis and Camryn Smith, brothers in-law Tom Rogers and Rick Rogers, sister in-law Laurie Rogers, Rogers-side nephew Travis Bernardy, Rogers-side nieces Karla Rogers, Valerie Borer, Heidi Rogers, Emily Rogers-Bradley, and Erin Bernardy, Rogers-side great nephews Beckett Lorincy, Griffin Lorincy and Vincent Borer, and Rogers-side great niece Quinn Borer.

Marilyn and Steve met at the University of Illinois and lived for several years in Urbana Illinois. They moved to Austin in 1980 and have lived there since then.

Marilyn completed her Masters Degree in Speech Pathology at the University of Texas at Austin in 1987. She subsequently worked for 20 years for the Austin Independent School District as a Speech Pathologist, spending most of that time at Brentwood Elementary School. She participated in the Austin Area Association of Speech Language Professionals for 14 years serving as Treasurer, VP of Programs and Membership. She was active in the Wooten Neighborhood Association for many years serving as President, vice president and secretary. She represented the mobility impaired community as chair of MISAC, an adivsory committee to the Capital Metro Board of directors in the 1990s.

Marilyn wrote birthday cards to hundreds of friends and relatives, always writing a personal note of some kind. She threw big birthday parties for herself on her "decade" birthdays and loved celebrating everyone's birthday. In that sprit of celebration, a Marilyn style celebration of life will be held on Saturday, April 13, from 1:00 PM until 4:30 PM at the Red Oak Ballroom at the Norris Conference Center at Northcross Mall,
2525 W. Anderson Lane, Suite 365 in Austin TX

Marilyn had a lifelong struggle against a debilitating muscle weakness caused by a form of Muscular Distrophy which probably shortened her life. She was determined to be as independent as she possible, and was inspiring to those who knew her and worked with her. As a disabled child, Marilyn was greatly influenced by attending "Camp Cheerful" in the Cleveland area. That camp experience helped her build confidence and drive to eventually become a very productive citizen. Make a memorial donation to that organization: Achievement Centers For Children

I had the pleasure of working with Marilyn at Brentwood when I started at AISD. She was so kind and supportive. She was such a big help to me as it was my first experience as a speech therapist in schools. I enjoyed our many talks and the friendship we shared. She was always so positive and always had a smile! I remember her very neat penmanship! I´m sorry was unable to attend her celebration of life. My condolences to Steve, who she often talked about, and all her family.

I met Marilyn at Impact Austin, an organization where we both enjoyed volunteering to review community grant proposals for many years. She was a valued member and friend for so many reasons, but especially her insightful critiques and the humor she brought to all of our meetings. My condolences to Steve and all of Marilyn's family and friends. With love, Fay

Marilyn was essentially my sister. She influenced me in so many ways. I met her when Steve brought her to our house from college. I was 17 at the time. That next year I joined them at U of I, where we continued to share our "coming of age" years together. Tom and Rick joined us there for college too. What I love most about her is her laugh, and her true spirit of humor and wacko-ness! Gosh we had fun! Years later, I had my children Travis and Erin create a 50 shape with their bodies for a birthday card. It needed up being passed back and forth to whoever was turning 50. I included the picture here. I will hold you in my heart forever Marigold! I love you.

Marilyn and I were both assigned to the same elementary school in Austin for one year. We shared a room and discussed cases and helped each other. Marilyn entrusted me to drive the van she and Steve had bought that had a wheel chair lift. I would go to her house and get behind the wheel and she and I would head to our monthly speech therapy meetings at Rosedale. Marilyn complimented me on my driving which made me feel more at ease driving such a special cargo. Sometimes after our meetings, we would go to Happy Hour with our other speech therapist friends. Then I would take Marilyn back home. I have fond memories of those times. Marilyn was a very strong woman. She dealt with life head on. I miss her. Sally Blacksmith

I knew Marilyn through my dad, Rob Dye, who worked with Steve for many years. Marilyn and I shared the same birthday (December 4th) and she sent the kindest birthday cards for her birthday twin every year since I was a young child. She was an incredibly thoughtful and special lady who clearly touched a great deal of people throughout her life-may her memory live through all of us.

Marilyn introduced herself to me when I fist began teaching at Brentwood. She was generous with her knowledge and support as I learned the ropes. I felt "safe" with Marilyn on my side.

It is very beautiful to see the outpouring of love here. Steve and I were "work brothers" for almost 38 years at NI, and knowing Marilyn through that time was a privilege. She was truly one of the sweetest persons I´ve ever known. I loved that Marilyn had my daughter, Avila, on her extensive birthday card list. The two of them shared a December 4 birth date and Marilyn never failed to to send a card and nice note, and Steve and Marilyn were so generous to shout out and celebrate Avila´s birthday at Marilyn´s 60th and (pictured here) 70th bashes. (Marilyn would also send an anniversary card to my wife and I each year on December 22!) Our family sends our love to both of you.

I always loved to hear Marilyn was coming to Wisconsin during the summers. Steve too (: Always fun times, whether meeting for a party somewhere or just sitting on the deck with a glass of wine, looking at the beautiful view. She was a wonderful, kind, strong lady and we will miss her...Always full of fun and mischief..

I `ve known Steve and Marilyn since their college years. As our music gurus in Austin, they never failed to have a new artist or venue discovered for our crowd to try. The early 80s were such fun!
I was lucky to have returned to Austin for visits in spring and summer 2023 to help celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary at a couple of restaurants, including one with (of course) live music. Marilyn was a joy to be with! I´ll always remember her.

Marilyn and I went to Lincoln High School together. She was the last graduating class of Lincoln. We have remained life long friends, even though separated by miles, we were always in touch. I cherished my visits when I was in Austin, Texas and when she came back home to Cleveland to visit family, we always got together. She will forever remain in my thoughts. Heaven has a new angel.

Marilyn was an inspiration to all she touched. I met Marilyn at St David´s pool where she participated in the community aquatics program We. became friends and I went to France with Marilyn and Steve. Marilyn and I played while Steve worked. In memory of that trip I lift a glass of champagne to Marilyn an amazing person and a special friend.

My first memory of Marilyn was a wild game of Farkle at Nova's home back in the 80's. She kept saying that 3 pairs should make a score, so we made it so.
I see that now, 40 yrs later, a 'Marilyn' is officially 750 points, according to the internet Farkle rules (although they call it 3 pairs). I think we granted her 1000.

My mother, Georgia Govea met her through my father Simon way back in the 80's and became lifelong friends. Marilyn was adviser and would attend many family functions including my oldest daughter's wedding. She was a true human being and anyone who knew her was lucky to be her friend. She will be missed.

I met Marilyn in the early nineties when she was my physical therapy patient. We immediately "clicked" and became good friends outside the clinic. I loved her independent spirit, her advocacy for the mobility impaired, and her infectious smile. She was one of the most inspiring people I has ever met. We moved away from Austin in 2011, and I cherished every single birthday and anniversary card from Marilyn in the years since our move. I will hold her memory near to my heart. Thinking of you Steve.

It's been over 30 years since we've seen all but a few people from the NI crowd, but my memory of Marilyn shines brightly - her warm presence and beautiful smile are fondly remembered. You were a great pair, Steve. Please accept our condolences.

Marilyn sent me a sympathy card when my mom passed away with a beautiful heartfelt note that she must have struggled to write by hand. It was a great comfort to me in my sorrow.

Marilyn was an unfailing friend to me for over 43 years. She - and Steve - have shared all life´s highs and lows with me throughout the decades. She was a trusted confidant, intrepid explorer, music connector, and deeply beloved friend. This is a picture of her celebrating her 70th birthday - pure joy. And she celebrated everyone´s birthday with as much joy as well. Love you always, Marigold.

I miss you Marilyn and the coffee talk we shared. I was fortunate to meet and become friends with you more than 30 years ago. Over the years we laughed and shared our stories and some great times together!
Marilyn you inspired me with your intellect, your fiercely independent nature, your ability to share friendships and your kind and loving soul.
I believe we will meet again one day and pick up where we left off.

Marilyn was wonderfully supportive of my music career - always a kind word to say whenever she came to a show. Marilyn was kind enough to write me handwritten notes even after I left Austin, and kept me abreast of her travels and musical pursuits. Her courage and bravery will forever be a shining example to me. RIP Marilyn Rogers.
