NEW FRANKLIN -- Marilyn J. Workman (nee Gillig), 80, went home to be with the Lord on April 20, 2009.
She was born March 7, 1929 in Edwards-ville, Ill., but was a lifelong resident of the Akron area, graduating from Kenmore High School and retiring from co-ownership of Hammer Tax Service. Marilyn was a long-time member of High Street Christian Church where she was a 60 year charter member of the choir. She enjoyed singing, was a Christmas Eve soloist at St. Joseph's Melkite Church, and was a soloist at various area churches. She was active as a 4H leader, in the Goodyear Theater, and in the YWCA Fred Waring Choir. She also enjoyed bowling.
A loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph M. and Ella H. Gillig and grandson, Andrew T. Strohschein, and is survived by her husband of 60 years, Chett R.; daughters, Gail L. (Ronald) Poling of Plano, Texas, Susan M. (Gary) Strohschein of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Carol A. (Rick) Klinger of Cuyahoga Falls; son, Michael R. (Kelly) Workman of Cincinnati; brother, Ralph W. (Betty) Gillig of Akron; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Bacher Funeral Home, 3326 Manchester Rd., on Wednesday, April 22 from 5 to 8 p.m. Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m., at High Street Christian Church, 131 S. High St., Akron, Rev. Joseph Eubanks Jr. and Rev. Charles Mills officiating. Friends may also call at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment at Manchester Cemetery. Chet, You and Marilyn were a great inspiration to us when we went into Mexico to work with the Canyon Lake group to build homes. Kermit and Gayle forworded this to us and we are glad to send our thoughts and prayers to you and your family. God bless you.

I am sorry to hear about the loss of your wife and mom. May the Lord comfort you all during this time. I remember listening to your Mom sing with the Choir and her solos. She always made me and my family feel welcome with her smile and warm hugs.

Whether it was a visit to Mike's to study for a college exam or just to hangout, Mrs. Workman always made me feel welcome in her home. I am very to sorry hear of her passing. My sympathies are with the Workman family.

You have our deepest sympathy. I remember Marilyn talking on the phone with mom (Faye) about taxes and Amigo scooters. Through her limitations she was independent, positive and strong. Our thoughts and prayers are with you!
