Dottie,
I was so sad to hear of Mario's passing. Bob told me when he came home from the University today. It has been a long road for the both of you, and you are to be commended for your constant love and devotion to Mario all these years. He is now at peace. I have pleasant memories of babysitiing for you & Mario as your neighbor and student of the University. He helped to guide me when I needed to fulfill my language requirement as an undergraduate Biology major. Bob also remembers having pleasant conversations with Mario when he was president of the teacher's union. I will always remember his smiling face and caring personality. Prayers go out to you and your family.

I was a wide-eyed freshman at Lowell State's orientation in 1974. Having tried high school Spanish and French with minimal success, I was desperate for a language class that would satisfy my Liberal Arts requirement for graduation. It was at this point that I met Professor Aste. He convinced me, as only he could, that his Italian class was the answer to my dilemma. In essence, the deal was: if you do you best, complete all assignments and show up for class, he would take care of the rest. In hindsight, I am convinced that had I not met Professor Aste that day, I would have flunked German (the one remaining language option) and consequently flunked out of Lowell State before it even become The University of Lowell. His faith in me, coupled with his joy of teaching a language and culture that he truly loved, was critical to my graduation. I was thankful that I got a chance to thank him personally in 2005 at my son's graduation from Lowell Catholic.
My thoughts are with the entire Aste family.

Dear Dottie,
I am so sorry to read about Mario's passing. You and I go back to St. Peter's School where you took over my teaching position when I went on maternity leave. I enjoyed meeting you both then and even had greater pleasure of reacquainting with you both when we taught at the Wang School together. Mario was a very kind and good man.

Dot and family, Although I did not know Mario while he was at UMass Lowell and only came to know him in his later years, I know he had a tremendous impact on the UML community. All of my friends who were either students or colleagues of Mario speak of him in superlatives that are reserved for only the most special people. Dot, I am blessed to have met you and to have been able to share so many heartfelt conversations. I am so impressed with your love, compassion and dedication for Mario. Your unwavering commitment to caring for him and making sure he received the best care possible was beyond impressive. You are in my thoughts. Brenda
