Marion Gioia Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 23, 2011.
SCARBOROUGH – Marion Gioia, passed away on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at Scarborough Terrace. She was born in Brooklyn, New York on March 16, 1933 to the late Jerome and Charlotte Rappeport.

In 1953 she married her childhood sweetheart Thomas J. Gioia. She raised two children in Long Island New York. Aside from taking time off when her children were young she had a career as financial analyst at such firms as Zurich Insurance, Colgate Palmolive and the Bank of America.
After being widowed at a young age she moved to Yarmouth, Maine to be near her children.
Marion was a member of St. Ansgar Lutheran Church in Portland where she enjoyed her friends in the sewing group. More recently she became a member of Emmaus Lutheran Church in Falmouth.

She is survived by her son Thomas Gioia and his wife Rhonda of Scarborough and daughter Catherine Nelson and her husband Michael of Gorham. She is also survived by the loves of her life - grandchildren Steven and Sara Nelson.

Her family would like to thank all of the wonderful people at the Maine Center for Cancer Medicine who provided wonderful care during her long battle with Breast Cancer. Especially, Dr. Kurt Ebrahim, Danielle Bowen, Missy and all of the other nurses in the treatment room
We also would like to thank the wonderful staff at Scarborough Terrace who provided much needed care for her during her short time there in partnership with Hospice of Southern Maine.

Services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Hospice of Southern Maine Attn: Development 180 US Route One, #1 Scarborough, ME 04074 or another charity of your choice which benefits cancer patients.

Our thoughts and prayers to the family and especially the grandchildren...it is never easy to lose the matriarch of the family..one whose presence and love bound the members together. May she love, guide and prepare the way for her family from afar as she did in this life.. It is we, those left behind who feel the loss of a loved one and shed tears for that loss. May you feel her presence in your thoughts and find happiness in the many memories . Our condolences to you all

Mrs. Gioia had an ever-present twinkle in her eye, a contagious giggle, and most of all a big heart. We will never forget her kindness to our children when we visited Maine - serving us bagels, tea and grapes and entertaining the little ones, even in times of ill health. She is dearly missed, but her vibrant spirit lives on in Tom, Cathy and their families. With love, Michael & April Capuder

Tom, Rhonda, Cathy and family - I am sorry to learn that your mother passed, but I hope you will soon find comfort in that she is now without pain and suffering. It is hard to lose those that we love, but harder to see them suffer. Hoping your sadness soon turns to smiles of happier times with her.
