Marion Washburn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 24, 2014.
Marion Nevitt Washburn went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, March 24, 2014. Visitation will be Wednesday, March 26, 2014 from 5:00 to 6:00pm with a Rosary at 6:00pm and fellowship to follow in Resthaven Funeral Home. Services will be held Thursday, March 27, 2014 at 2:00 pm at Christ the King Cathedral. Born October 8, 1932 in Dallas, Texas, Marion moved to Lubbock while a small child. Marion's fighting spirit was demonstrated at an early age when she overcame polio. Near the end of her life, Marion would draw on this same strength to fight a lengthy battle against cancer. She graduated from Lubbock High School in 1950 and from Texas Tech University in 1954. She met Frank Floyd Washburn at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church where they later married on January 9, 1960. Marion, affectionately known to family and friends as Bonnie, was a loving mother to her three children and a proud "Mema" to her two grandchildren. Marion devoted her life to her family and friends. Nothing made her happier than a house full of people laughing and playing games. Marion enjoyed all sorts of games whether it was charades, bridge, a board game or slots- she was always a part of the fun. Her cooking was enjoyed by all who knew her and many memories were built around her special dishes. When not cooking, she enjoyed lunch with the BOBS- a group of life-time friends who supported each other with laughter and fellowship throughout the years. Marion was notorious for her pranks; she was always smiling and had a mischievous twinkle in her eye. She loved to travel, always finding pleasure in exploring new things and spending time with family. She especially enjoyed her annual treks to Ruidoso with the gang. Marion had a love for all things musical, finding special joy in opera and theatre. Her love and devotion to her children and husband were the driving force throughout her life. Anyone who knew Marion knew that for her, family always came first. Marion was a member of Christ the King Parish where she and her husband Frank were founding members. Marion is survived by her beloved husband, Frank Floyd; daughter, Shannon Washburn of Dallas; son, Matt and wife, Shauna Washburn of Lubbock and son, Michael Washburn of Lubbock; her two grandchildren Saxton and Meagan Washburn of Dallas; her sister-in-law, Sharon Washburn of Lubbock; brother-in-law David and wife Sherri Washburn of Oklahoma; numerous much loved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Hibernia Nevitt; sister, Erin Sneed and sister, Christi Purtell. The Washburn family would like to give special thanks to Deacon Randy Canale, Dr. Bennie Phillips and staff and Accolade Homecare and Hospice for their kindness and professionalism. They would also like to acknowledge the overwhelming outpouring of love and support from friends and family throughout Marion's illness. In Lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Catholic Charities Diocese of Lubbock, Inc., 102 Avenue J, Lubbock, Texas 79401 or a favorite charity. Arrangements under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home & Cemetery, Lubbock, TX.

She was all us kids' second mom. She was a best friend to all our moms. Her love for her family is so evidently seen In the strength and courage of her three children, and her lifelong companion Mr. Washburn. She lifted us constantly.....to the very end. What a Godly woman. Heaven has received an angel!

My heart breaks that we have lost one who made our lives a little more bearable here on this earth but it rejoices in the knowledge that Marion is at peace in the arms of her Saviour. She is finally laughing on Glory's side.

Frank and family,
I had the honor of working with Marion from 1987 until her retirement. She was a very special lady, and was loved by all in our office. I referred to her as "Mrs. Cleaver". May you find peace and comfort in the coming days.
