Marjorie (Margie) Gohmert

Marjorie "Margie" Janice Gohmert, age 101, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2025, in Houston, Texas. Born on August 18, 1924, in Pattison, Texas, Margie was the daughter of Gus Lee and Cora Edith Buller. From her earliest days, faith, family, and hard work defined her life.

She graduated from Baylor University in 1944 with a degree in Journalism and married Stanley Rheman in 1945. Together they raised four children.

Margie carried her love for family, words, writing, and editing into every stage of her life. She had a keen eye for detail and couldn't resist correcting a misplaced comma or typo with her red pen, whether in a church bulletin, a menu, or even a library book. After she raised her children on the Brookshire family ranch (now known as the Brookwood Community), she moved to Houston, where she taught English at Houston Night High School. She also volunteered at Diagnostic Hospital, eventually serving as their beloved Director of Volunteers.

In her fifties, Margie laced up her running shoes and discovered a love for jogging, eventually completing two marathons. She became one of the oldest participants to earn a finisher's trophy at the Houston Marathon, a milestone that reflected her determination and resilience. She also enjoyed gardening and delighted in her "wine time" with family and friends. When asked for the secret to her long life, she always credited her faith, wine, and her daily Red Bull.

In 1991, Margie married Louis Gohmert and moved to Mt. Pleasant, Texas, where she found not only a new hometown, but also a host of new friends and family. Her faith grew deeper as she became an active member of the First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant.

After losing her beloved husband, Louis, in 2021, and returning to Houston the following year, she continued to hold the First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant close to her heart. Her devotion to Pastor Clint Davis, her Bible study group, and the dear friends she cherished there never wavered.

She was happiest in the kitchen, where she found joy in preparing meals for family, friends, and neighbors. Her cooking was an act of love, from everyday dinners to birthday and holiday spreads. She was especially known for her divinity and vanilla wafers, which she shared generously with family, friends, and even strangers who quickly became friends. Her table was always a place of laughter, storytelling, and fellowship.

She is survived by her children: Janis Arnold and husband, Steve; Ginger Wheless, Tom Rheman, Vicki Emerson and husband, Allen; extended daughter, Nina Walker and husband, Lanny; grandchildren Mary Kay Wheless Hunt, Chris Hillhouse, Faith Brons and husband, Charlie; Will Arnold and wife, Alex; Joy Rheman, Michelle Rheman-Alvarez and husband, Patricio; extended grandchildren Katherine Evans and husband Daniel; Liz Casillas and husband, Luis and Jake Walker; great-grandchildren Kaila Brown, Matthew Hunt, Elizabeth Hunt, Skylar Chapa, Oryn Arnold, Finlay Arnold and Zoe Rheman; extended great-grandchildren Oliver Evans, Hudson Evans, and Lyla Evans.

Margie maintained a close relationship with her cousins and cherished the visits of those who lived close by including Gary Gostecnik, Page Varner, Angela Williams, PresleyAnn Williams, Katie Sue Williams, and Jean Smith.

Her life will be celebrated on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant, Texas. A visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff and residents at The Tradition Buffalo Speedway for their companionship and community and to Choice Hospice, especially Paul Cotton and his associates, for their dedicated and compassionate care.

Margie lived her 101 years with a generous spirit, quick wit, and unwavering faith. Whether she was cooking her famous divinity, jogging a marathon, editing a magazine, or raising a glass of wine at sunset, she taught her family and friends that every day is a gift meant to be shared, savored, and celebrated.
