Marjorie McKune Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 9, 2025.
Marjorie Ellen (Margy) McKune died peacefully in her independent living apartment in Williamsport, Maryland, on January 27, 2025, after a long illness. Margy, born in 1937 in Springfield, Ohio, was the youngest child of Albert and Grace (Sealock) Hollowell.

A few years into their marriage, Margy and John McKune figured out that they had originally met much earlier. When she was 7 years old, Margy's mother sent her to Bowman's Good Housekeeping to purchase a replacement cord for an electric iron. She felt uncertain about this task, so was relieved when a knowledgeable 14-year-old salesperson (John) knew exactly what cord she needed to buy. They reconnected many years later, after Margy attended Ohio State University for a year, and married in 1957. They celebrated their 67th anniversary in October.

Margy and John shared their love by expanding their family as foster and adoptive parents. Margy was a natural caregiver, so after her youngest child was old enough to go to school, she took a job at Mothers' Out, a daycare center run by her church. She loved working with the three and four-year-old children because she could see their personalities developing. She often shared stories about these interactions-her stories reflecting her wonderful sense of humor. Margy was a walker and nature lover. She led her small charges on walks through the neighborhood, sometimes to a nearby bakery for cookies.

Margy and John enjoyed their retirement in Nashville, Indiana, and taking trips that hadn't been an option earlier in their lives. They went to the United Kingdom three times, with the last trip being a series of challenging hikes in the Scottish highlands. In her late 60s, Margy began struggling with major healthcare challenges. She approached them with her mantra adopted from Sister Julian of Norwich, "All shall be well, all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well."

Margy is survived by her husband John; children Diane (Wayne) Beamer, John (Debbie) McKune, Amy (Ken Moncrieff) McKune, and Hope McKune; and grandchildren David (Kristi) McKune and Megan McKune; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents and siblings: Albert Hollowell, Ralph Hollowell, and Coralie Kidd. A memorial service will be held in the spring at Margy and John's church of many years, First Presbyterian Church in Columbus, Indiana.

Margy was such a sweet person. We learned to know she and John when we lived nearby for a short 3 1/2 years. Such a sweet story about the cord! We miss her and try to comfort John. One of these times we will meet you again.
