Mark Buxton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 9, 2013.
MANCHESTER, Conn. - Col. Mark K. Buxton Jr., USAF (Retired) of Manchester, passed away after a brief illness on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013. He was born in Lancaster, N.H., on July 6, 1928, and always considered this his "hometown."

His parents were Mark and Arlene Buxton and his stepmother, Allison Buxton. He is survived by his daughters, Deborah Goldberg and her husband, Jon of West Hartford, Donna Munroe and her husband, Bob of Bolton, Mara Buxton of South Windsor and Eleanore Buxton, the mother of his children. He leaves behind his five grandchildren: Elise, Brett and Brynne Goldberg and Katherine and Rob Munroe. He is also survived by his dear and close friend and companion, Dorothy Swenson.

Col. Buxton served with the U.S. Air Force from the latter days of World War II, the Korean War and through the Vietnam War. His assignments took him to the Panama Canal Zone, the Philippines, Venezuela and Vietnam and numerous air bases in the 50 states. He was awarded the Bronze Star medal for his Vietnam service and various other awards for exemplary work in a range of staff assignments. He was a member of the Charter Oak Chapter (MOAA) and served as its vice president, secretary and treasurer for several periods.

Mark was an accomplished sailor, building his first sailboat while serving the Air Force in Maine. He was an avid skier for many years, enjoying the slopes of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado and many New England slopes. Mark taught himself the art of fine woodworking and built many handsomely crafted tables, desks, book cases and other items still cherished by his daughters and friends.

There are no calling hours and burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Dear Girls,
I was so sorry to hear about jour Dad. My husband, Bill, found and cut out the obituary for me. Mark Jr. and I used to play and fight together. You girls may not remember me, but I knew you when you were all younger. Say "hi" to your mother for me. I lost track of all of you. I did see your Dad a few years ago when he came up to the Balsams. He looked so much like his father,Mark Sr, to me. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Deb, Donna, and Mara,
I always looked up to and admired your dad. I'll remember his jovial manner and distinctive laugh. He really was a "good guy".

Col. Buxton was a wonderful man.He told the best stories and his jokes were always corny. He had seen so many places and lived all over the world. It made him so very interesting. We enjoyed learning about all of his experiences. He had a solid sense of family values and a big heart! He will be missed here at the Arbors where he lived.Col.Buxton brightened the hallways of this community. He had such a fabulous, positive presence. The current events bunch will miss him dearly. We won't be the same without him.

I will always remember the Colonel!

My best wishes to his family. His daughters were so devoted to him and he always spoke so fondly about them.He loved to talk about their early homelife and bringing up his children .
