Mark R. Dean Sr.

Mark R. Dean Sr., 74, of Griswold, CT, died on Friday, July 11th, surrounded by his family, beloved dogs, and Motown music.

Born in Westerly, RI, to the late David Dean and Dorothy (Smith) Dean, Mark grew up in Pawcatuck and graduated from Stonington High School, Class of '69. Entering the workforce at eighteen, he embarked on a brief adventure in commercial fishing in Stonington before building a long career at Pfizer, from which he retired in 2005. An avid golfer, Mark enjoyed his extra time on a course.

A man of few words-unless circled up with his close family-Mark was happiest when spending time with his furry or feathered friends, a day on the water captaining a boat, watching movies from the comfort of his recliner, or vacationing in Mexico with Jo.

Mark is survived by his wife of 29 years, Joanne (Sawaryn) Dean, whose dedication allowed him to spend his final days in the comfort of their home. He also leaves behind his daughter, Terry Cholewa, and her husband Dan of Griswold, and their children: Sarah Cholewa and her partner Rob; Nathan Cholewa, his wife Tessa, and their children, Dean and Mack. He is also survived by Christopher Sawaryn and his wife Kara of Preston; and Mark Dean Jr., his wife Aimee of Voluntown, and their children: Kaitlyn Merchant, her husband Pierce, and their son Levi; Dylan Dean; and Devan Dean. Mark was predeceased by his brothers, Terrance and Brian Dean.

The family would like to thank the medical professionals at ECHO, who ran alongside Mark in his 21-year battle with pancreatic cancer, and Hartford HealthCare at Home Hospice Care-with a special hug to Christa Velardi. In addition, heartfelt appreciation goes to Mark's "kids" and his chosen family, including Kathy Bocciarelli, all of whom brought comfort during Mark's courageous final days.
